Julius August Ludwig Wegscheider (September 27, 1771 - January 27, 1849), German theologian, was born at Kübelingen[?], Brunswick.
In 1830 he (with his colleague Wilhelm Gesenius) was threatened with deposition for teaching rationalism, and though he retained his office he lost his influence, which passed to FA Tholuck and Julius Müller.

Seeking to establish for himself a middle position between rationalism and supernaturalism, he declared for a "rational supernaturalism," and contended that there must be a gradual development of Christian doctrine corresponding to the advance of knowledge and science.
But at the same time he sought, like other representatives of this school of thought, such as K. Bretschneider and Julius Wegscheider, to keep in close touch with the historical theology of the Protestant churches.
He was a man of great versatility and extensive learning, a philologist and philosopher as well as a theologian, and a very voluminous author.

WEGSCHEIDER, JULIUS AUGUST LUDWIG (1771-1849), German theologian, was born at Kiibelingen, Brunswick, on the 17th of September 1771, studied theology at Helmsta.dt, was tutor in a Hamburg family 1795-1805, Repetent at Gottingen, professor of theology at Rinteln in Hesse (18o6-1815), and at Halle from 1815.
In 183o he (with his colleague Wilhelm Gesenius) was threatened with deposition for teaching rationalism, and though he retained his office he lost his influence, which passed to F. Tholuck and Julius Miller.
His chief works were Uber die von der neuesten Philosophie geforderte Trennung der Moral von der Religion (18o4); Einleitung in des Evangelium Johannis (18o6); and Institutiones theologicae dogmaticae (1815), to which W. Steiger's Kritik des Rationalismus in Wegscheider's Dogmatik (183o) was a reply.
