At-A-Glance Film Reviews: Julius Caesar (1953)
This production of William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar is fantastic.
Film scholars may find it particularly intriguing, since it casts Marlon Brando as Marc Antony.
Brando is famous for being the first "method" actor, a style counterpoint to so-called Shakespearean acting, but here he is doing Shakespeare.

This film is one of the best performances of a Shakespearean play ever placed on celluloid, when you consider the outstanding acting (which really gets inside the skins of the characters) and the well-paced direction.
It seems that if you're going to transfer a play onto film then the strengths of cinema should be used to enhance the script, rather than playing the story in a direct theatrical fashion (which is not to say that this approach is wrong, just that Julius Caesar could have been even greater).

Julius Caesar has been a popular Shakespeare play for the last four centuries.
However the play notably disappeared from production in times of political disquiet such as the English Civil War (when the theatres were closed) and from 1780 to 1812 when there may have been fears that the ideas of the French revolution may spread to the UK.
In the 20th century Julius Caesar appeared on celluloid in the 1953 film starring John Gielgud, Marlon Brando and Greer Garson.
