Julius Ernst Wilhelm Fucik, a Bohemian composer and musician, was born on 18.
Fucik became principal conductor of the Prague City Orchestra as well as the conductor of the Danica Choir in Sisak, Croatia in 1896.
In 1897 Fucik rejoined the army as the bandmaster of the 86th Infantry Regiment in Sarajevo in Bosnia.

Composed when he was only 23, it is uncertain whether "In Storm and Sunshine" was created specifically for a circus, but has none the less established itself as a circus favorite and stands as the best known of Heed's 60 marches.
Composed in 1897 at the end of his tenure with the carnival, the "Belford's Carnival March" has remained a staple of the circus march repertory.
Fucik was a bassoonist under J. Wagner in an Austro-Hungarian regimental band before later receiving his own regimental bandmaster appointment.

Fucik, whose composition teacher was Antonin Dvorak, was a prolific composer with nearly 400 works to his credit.
The march was originally titled "La Rosa Di Toscana" but due to political reasons, the composer was forced to change his salute from the entire region of Tuscany to its capital, Florence.

He was a prolific composer, with over 300 marches, polkas and waltzes to his name.
However his world wide reputation rests on one work, his opus 68 march the Entrance of the Gladiators (Vjezd gladiátoru), which is universally recognized as the theme tune of clowns in a circus.

Fucik wrote a new piece (whether march, polka, or other peppy fun things) every few months, and was famous as a band leader.
He moved to Berlin in the early 1910s to start a music publishing company (the equivalent of a record label at the time); but war broke out, and in the devastation, he died, along with millions of other Europeans, and the existences of the Austro-Hungarian, Russian, and German empires.

Maybe it's because in the last fifty years Julius Fucik was always somewhat overshadowed by his nephew of the same name, a hero of communist anti-Nazi resistance during WW2 - Julius Fucik, the author of the world-known Report from the Gallows also known as Notes from the Gallows.
Fucik first played the bassoon in a military orchestra in Krems and Vienna and in the Zagreb opera orchestra.
Perhaps the most famous pieces by Julius Fucik are his marches "The Entry of the Gladiators", "Florentine" and "Hercegovac".

Found in 2001, it was composed in 1917 during World War I. Debussy gave the piece to his coal supplier for keeping his house warm during the winter in Paris.

Van Loan was credited as the composer of several 1920s era songs and seems to have worked as an arranger on Broadway as late as 1948.
It was composed by Vincent Rose and had lyrics by Harry Owens.
The song was written in 1897 by Czech composer Julius Fucik and was known as "Entry of the Gladiators." In 1910 Canadian bandmaster Louis-Phillipe Laurendeau revived the song and renamed it "Thunder and Blazes."

(also known as Thunder and Blazes, originally rendered in Czech as Vjezd gladiátoru) is a highly recognizable march composed in 1897 by the Czech composer Julius Fucík.
Although the tune is widely recognized, its name and composer are relatively obscure.
From circus day in Pompey's Rome complete with lions, pachyderms and performances interspersed with chariot racing until modern day Cirque de Soleil, circuses remain the most enduring and endearing form of family entertainment in the world.
