Pokorny (1959) also postulates by implication 2,044 starred or hypothetical forms reconstructed from the extant written reflexes of the languages found in the following fourteen IE language groups.
According to Pokorny (1959:1089) the apparent Germanic cognate form draw (and hence drawer, withdraw, draft, drag, draught) is due to contamination with another IE root 406 (ibid., 273).
Pokorny's dictionary has served as the standard dictionary in the field of Indo-European studies for all those that can read German since 1959 and especially since 1969, when the index was published.

 Indo-European studies - Indo-European
Julius Pokorny in 1959 published his Indogermanisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch, giving an overview of the lexical knowledge accumulated until the early 20th century, but neglecting then-recent trends of morphology and phonology, and largely ignoring Anatolian and Tocharian.
Current efforts are focussed on a better understanding of the relative chronology within the proto-language, aiming at distinctions of "early", "middle" and "late", or "inner" and "outer" PIE dialects, but a general consensus has yet to form.
In German literature, Indo-Europäisch was used by Franz Bopp since 1835, while the term Indo-Germanisch was introduced by Julius von Klapproth in 1823, intending to include the northernmost and the southernmost of the family's branches, as it were as an abbreviation of the full listing of involved languages that had been common in earlier literature.

Julius Pokorny, 1887-1970: Germans, Celts and nationalism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Julius Pokorny (1887-1970) was the foremost Celtic scholar of his generation on the European mainland.
In 1935 Pokorny lost his Berlin professorship because the Nazis discovered that, though he was a Catholic, his grandparents had all been Jewish.
This book examines the main issues surrounding Pokorny's life, including assimilationist Jewry in fin-de-siecle Austria, German involvement in Celtic scholarship and Irish nationalism, mythology in Joyce's Ulysses, Nazi anti-Semitism vis-avis Jewish German nationalists, Irish and Swiss attitudes to refugees, and the value of Pokorny's scholarship.

 Hercynian Forest Information
During the time of Julius Caesar, this forest blocked the advance of the Roman legions into Germania.
We do find an indication that this circumstance was fairly recent; that is, Posidonius states that the Boii, who were Celtic, were once there (as well as in Bohemia).
It is possible that the name of the Harz Mountains in Germany is derived from Hercynian, as Harz is a Middle High German word meaning "mountain forest." The name of Pforzheim (Porta Hercyniae) in southwest Germany is also derived from Hercynian.

The Indogermanisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch ("The Indo-European Etymological Dictionary") by the Jewish-Czech scholar and Irish nationalist Julius Pokorny was published in 1959.
The work is now slightly outdated, especially as it was conservative even at the time Pokorny wrote it, ignoring the laryngeal theory, and hardly including any Tocharian or Anatolian material.
But there exists no more modern and updated etymological dictionary of the Indo-European languages, so it is still of interest to scholars.
