Léon Kossak (1815–77) was a dilettante painter; his brother (1) Juliusz Kossak, noted for his skilled watercolours, especially of equestrian subjects, was the real founder of a line of artists.
Juliusz’s son (2) Wojciech Kossak was a painter specializing in military, as well as equestrian subjects.
His son Jerzy Kossak (1886–1955) also became a painter; his daughters both became writers.

Chelminski began his training with two years (1866-68) at the Warsaw Drawing School and independent study with Juliusz Kossak.
His first works were copies of watercolors by Juliusz Kossak.

The dogs represented in the works of Juliusz Kossak (1868) and Jozef Brandt (1883) were large, well muscled and well propertioned, with the typical coat, longer on the backs of the thighs and on the tail.
One example which illustrates the passion for hunting of the nobles and the efficiency of the dogs is found in a fragment of the poem, "Pan Tadeusz" by A. Mickiewicz (1834) known by all the Polish, which decribes the bet of two owners of sighthounds on the coursing of a hare by the dogs.

 About Jozef Korolkiewicz.
At 15 Korolkiewicz, encouraged by the famous horse painter Wojciech Kossak, enrolled in the Warsaw School of Fine Arts where Kossak was a professor.
This can be seen in the works of Piotr Michalowski, Maksymilian Gierymski, Juliusz Kossak, Wojciech Kossak, Jozef Chelmonski, Jozef Brandt who are some of the greatest Polish masters of the period.
His own art is a blend of the romantic vision of nature with touches of Delacroix or Gericault (both had many splendid studies of horses to their credit) and the postimpressionistic palette enriched with the tone of expression.

Konopnicka's poem was a protest against the Prussian legislation that introduced a gradual expropriation of Polish land owners in the Prussian partition of Poland (remaining under Prussian occupation in 1795-1918).

In 1858 he left for Paris to study at the Ecole des ponts et chausses but was persuaded by Juliusz Kossak to abandon engineering in favor of painting.
Kossak and Henryk Rodakowski were his first teachers in Paris, and for a time he attended the studio of Leon Cogniet.
He continued his study in Munich in 1862, chiefly under Franz Adam, Theodor Horschelt, and Karl von Piloty.
