  Juilliard School - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The president of the school at that time was William Schuman, the first winner of the Pulitzer Prize for music.
The school gradually branched out, first adding a dance division and later one for drama, and since 1969, when it moved to the Lincoln Center, it carries its present name.
A major part of the school, the Pre-College Division is that part of the school which teaches students that are enrolled in elementary, junior high, and high school.

At the time The Juilliard School was founded in 1905 -- as the Institute of Musical Art -- the idea of establishing a music academy in America was somewhat of a novelty.
Pianist and composer Ernest Hutcheson, who had been Dean of the Juilliard Graduate School since 1927, then also became Dean of the Institute; in 1937, he was appointed President of the combined institutions.
The amalgamation of the two schools was gradual, continuing through the administration of President Hutcheson (1937-45).The next President of the combined schools was composer William Schuman, first winner of the Pulitzer Prize for music.

In 1926, the Graduate School and the Institute of Musical Art merged as the Juilliard School of Music under one president, the distinguished Columbia University professor John Erskine, but with separate deans and identities.
In addition, Dr. Polisi has led the process of developing a comprehensive long-range plan for the School that has resulted in a $150 million capital campaign dedicated to enhancing student financial aid and faculty compensation, as well as the development of schoolwide programs that will prepare Juilliard students for the demands of the 21st century.

When choosing a school, I specifically looked for a place that was different from my hometown and my high school, a place that was diverse and interesting and stimulating, a place with a wide variety of people studying a wide variety of things.
Certainly, there are schools that have certain programs that are better—Julliard, for example, has a better music program, and MIT has a better engineering program.
They are not Universities in the sense that UT is (I suppose that’s why they’re the Julliard School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology).

In 1946, the name Juilliard School of Music became official and in 1951, its Dance Division, combining training in both contemporary and ballet technique, was established.
