African Music Encyclopedia: Johnny Clegg   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In the early 1970s Clegg teamed up with Sipho Mchunu and as Juluka they made history as they bucked the strict apartheid government by becoming the first mixed-race band to play together on stage.
Juluka's sound melded the predominant Zulu sound with the Celtic callings from Clegg's origins.
In the mid-1990s Clegg and Juluka reformed, with original member Sipho Mchunu, and they toured the world on a bill with King Sunny Ade.

Juluka split in 1985 — Sipho went back to his farm in Zululand where he was born.
Musically it had a slightly harder edge and was different to JULUKA in that instead of two guitars and a keyboard it was based around two keyboards and a guitar.

Juluka was born out of the incredible and unlikely friendship of Johnny Clegg, a middle/upper class white kid from the suburbs, and Sipho Mchunu, a Zulu tribesman, who came to the city to work as a gardener during the Apartheid era of South Africa.
It was inevitable for their paths to cross and what started off as a friendly guitar challenge blossomed into a genre-busting partnership that would first take the nation by storm and later introduce the world to the unique musical style of Juluka.
Although it was heralded by the press as the wave of the future, it did not receive any airplay in South Africa due to the cultural segregationist laws that prevailed.

Around this time, Juluka's musical balance had begun to tip in favor of rock, and so, remembered Clegg, "...he (Mchunu) basically thought, the stuff that's going down internationally is not really the traditional stuff...It's not the stuff that's being put on the radio because it's in Zulu.

In the days of apartheid, Juluka encountered their share of problems, including the banning of their first album by the South African government.

In a well-intentioned gesture of political unity, singer/guitarist Johnny Clegg (an English academic raised in Zimbabwe and South Africa) joined forces with Sipho Mchunu, a fl South African street musician, to form Juluka, a failed experiment in combining rock with Zulu chants and the mbaqanga sound of the South African township.
The results, heard on both of the interracial group's Warner Bros. records, are a mush of sweet, laid-back California style harmonies over a loping backbeat, with mild anti-apartheid sentiments.
The slick production of Third World Child relieves it of the simple, unassuming emotionality of township music, and the selfconscious, breast-beating lyrics of the title track and "Berlin Wall" suggest that Clegg's gunning for the Nobel peace prize while attempting to forge a calculated commercial sound.
