 Stanley Galik - LCI 35 - Ships Cook 2/c US Navy WWII - LCI 35 1944 - June - July Landings
On July 11th, 143 British troops including officers boarded the ship and at 1845 the LCI 35 was underway in a convoy of 6 USS LCIs and 9 HMLCIs bound for Normandy.
The month of July concluded with the LCI 35 in the repair docks in Northeast Quay tied up to LCI 33 where the crew once again returned to painting the ship dark blue and maintenance crews worked on repairing the cathead port ramp roller and welded the starboard exhaust tubes.
On June 25, 1944 all hands were called to pull in the stern end of the ramp after the starboard ramp cable broke and the ramp dropped down on the pontoon dock.

July 23, 1944, marked the end of the Battle of Brody, a 10-day bloodbath that saw the demise of thousands of young Ukrainian soldiers of the Galicia Division, seen as a precursor to a Ukrainian national army.
On July 7, after surveying the situation around Brody and realizing their huge advantage in airplanes and artillery, the First Ukrainian Front submitted a plan of attack to headquarters; on July 13 the Soviets began their offensive.
That move, however, made it easier for the Soviets to enclose the Ukrainian troops; by July 18 the Galicia Division was surrounded.

In the seven weeks between D-Day and 31 July 1944, despite shortcomings in combat experience and the difficult Normandy terrain, the U.S. First Army defeated the Germans in a series of battles that placed a premium on leadership and ingenuity at the small-unit level.
By 25 July, CCA of the 2d Armored and the 22d Infantry had developed a novel way for tanks and infantry to cooperate during fast-moving operations: the infantry rode on the back decks of tanks and only dismounted when the attack met stiff enemy resistance.
For First Army, 6 June-31 July was a period of great adaptability, as unit commanders and their soldiers came to grips with the problems of fighting in the hedgerow country.

On a mission to Magdeburg on 29 June 1944 we were crippled by flak which cut the gasoline hose in the bomb bays and completely sprayed the inside of the ship, going back to the tail turret covering the glass.
This unidentified crewman was buried in the parish-church cemetery at Oberpfaffenhofen, left side of the entrance, on 25 July according to this later report.

In Germany, between January and June 1944, Allied fighters swept the skies clear of German warplanes and took a heavy toll in pilots.
Faced with hostile fire from an invisible enemy, the unit's commanders found the principles of fire and maneuver nearly impossible to apply in the hedgerows, especially the precept that an attacking force should move just behind its artillery in order to confront the enemy while he is still off balance.
During July the British Adjutant General had underscored the point by personally traveling to Normandy to notify him that some British battalions had already been divided to fill gaps in the line and that divisions might be next.

FARRAGUT, Idaho, July 1 (AP) - Thomas W. Russell, boatswain's mate, first class, of Bridgeboro, Ga., told today how a skipper of a destroyer saved his blazing ship by giving it a bath in the wake of the aircraft carrier Enterprise.
The seaman, now a patient at the naval hospital here, was a gun captain on the Enterprise.
