Topic: Jumper (computing)

Jumper (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In electronics and particularly computing, a jumper is two or more connecting points that can be conveniently shorted together to set up or adjust a printed circuit board, such as a computer's motherboard.
Jumper shunts are almost always metal, and are usually encased in a non-conductive block of plastic for convenience, and to avoid the risk that an unshielded shunt will accidentally short out something critical (particularly if it is dropped onto a live circuit).
Typically, each jumper is assigned and labelled with a number, which is referred to in an instruction list printed on the motherboard or in the manual.

A jumper dress or simply jumper (British English: pinafore dress, pinafore, pinny), is a sleeveless, collarless dress intended to be worn over a blouse or sweater.
The distinction between a jumper dress and an apron dress is less clear cut and in some cases either term is correct.
It seems to me that it is usual to use the word "jumper" by itself when referring to the item, and that "jumper dress" would be limited in use to circumstances where it is necessary to distinguish between different types of dresses.

When it comes to a computer's internal organs, few are as vital to the system as the hard drive, and none is as valuable to the user.
To avoid frustrating situations, computer users must be diligent in performing drive maintenance and must be aware of situations that could prove disastrous to a hard drive and the data stored on it.
Similarly, when the computer looks for data that has become cross-linked, it won't be able to find the data because it won't be located where the computer thinks it's located.

At takeoff, the jumper's arms are extended up and out, and so the center of mass of a weighted jumper is further forward and higher than it would be without halteres.
As the jumper prepares to land, the halteres are swung down and backward so that, on landing, the feet of the weighted jumper are more forward of the center of mass than they are for modern, unweighted athletes.
The greater takeoff speed achieved by loaded jumpers led to increases in distances beyond those generated by using the halteres to shift the position of the feet relative to the center of mass.

Many disks have jumpers that allow you to make the disk appear smaller than it is. A silly thing to do, and probably no Linux user ever wants to use this, but some BIOSes crash on big disks.
Most disks can be jumpered so as to appear as a 2 GB disk and then report a clipped geometry like 4092/16/63 or 4096/16/63, but still report full LBAcapacity.
With this "stroke" option jumpered disks will in many cases be handled correctly, i.e., be seen with full capacity (in spite of the jumper).

There are a handful of reasons why your PC won't detect a newly installed optical drive, but the most common culprit is that the jumper settings on the new drive conflict with the jumper settings of another optical drive already installed.
The documentation for your new optical drive should indicate where the jumper should be placed to set it as a Slave drive.
Remove the jumper and place it on the pins corresponding to the Slave setting and reinstall the drive.

A PXE-enabled workstation connects its NIC to the LAN via a jumper, which keeps the workstation connected to the network even when the power is off.
Because a network administrator does not have to physically visit the specific workstation and manually boot it, operating systems and other software, such as diagnostic programs, can be loaded onto the device from a server over the network.
To be considered compliant, the PXE must be supported by the computer's BIOS and its NIC.
