Armchair Arcade: Article / Early Commodore 64 Platformers: Jumpman, Spelunker, Ultimate Wizard, and Pharaoh’s Curse
Jumpman and Pharaoh’s Curse are the most straightforward; once the player masters the art of jumping, climbing, and (in one case) shooting, the rest of the game consists of mastering individual levels.
Jumpman, in particular, was one of the best games of all time IMHO, despite having perhaps the worst graphics ever for a top-charting platform game.
Jumpman and especially Pharaoh's Curse are two games that I still play today, and are two reasons I still keep my Atari XEGS in service.

Even if you die, you are treated to watching Jumpman go bumpity-bump all the way down the screen, through all the platforms, until he reaches the bottom, at which point some sort of odd, Egyptian-like death theme starts to play.
It's somewhat fun to watch for a while, especially since Jumpman can still collect flowers as he falls and won't even lose a life if he manages to catch the last flower in the level in his death throes.
