Topic: Jun Sok Hwang

 [No title]
Hwang (now serving a prison term for unauthorized visits to North Korea) was himself a marine in Vietnam.
Hwang includes in his book detailed accounts of several different atrocities by U.S. troops including My Lai and the incident of rape-murder of a Vietnamese girl by U.S. soldiers which in the early 1980s was turned by Brian de Palma into a movie starring Sean Penn and Michael J. Fox (I forget the title).
Hwang says nothing about atrocities by the Korean troops in Vietnam, however, and when the English translation was published, this conspicuous omission was noted by Paik Nak-Chung of Seoul National University in his preface.

Hwang was born to a Christian family in 1915 near Pyongyang, a center of Christianity in early modern Korea.
Hwang is the author of some of the best-known stories of modern Korea: "Pyôl" (Stars, 1941), "Hwang Noin" (Old Man Hwang, 1949), "Tok chinnûn nûlgûni" (The Old Potter, 1950), "Kogyesa" (Pierrot, 1952), "Hak" (Cranes, 1953), "Sonagi" (Shower, 1959), and "Karangbi" (Drizzle, 1961), among others.
From his earliest stories, Hwang has been concerned with the conflict between the traditional obligations that Korean society--often in the form of the family--imposes on the individual, and the Western notion that the individual is capable of exercising free will in responding to those obligations.
