Junayd said to him, "From the time you left your home did you also leave behind all wrong action?" "No," replied the man. "Then you never really left at all.
At the same time it is vital to point out that Imam Junayd's words do not involve any kind of inward/outward dichotomy, some kind of inward meaning to hajj separate from the outward form.
For this reason it is extremely important to keep a watch on your heart, and one way to do this is to choose a simple formula of dhikr and to repeat it continually, remembering to change it to the Qur'anic du'a recommended by the Prophet between the Yamani corner and the Black Stone.

Ultimately, understanding these points and making them our own is a lifelong process of prayer and meditation, but once understood and lived with they give birth, quite naturally, to action.
Jesus, Junayd, and Cliff Reed are asking us to make just such lives - to pray and reflect consistently on the reality of the Divine Unity and then to take this profound and sustaining vision out into the highways and byways of life.
This war, with all its moral difficulties, is shouting at us to do likewise and witness to the truth of this Divine Unity each person holds within whether them whether living here in Cambridge or in the middle of war torn Baghdad - whether Christian or Muslim (or, indeed, any other faith).
