The Juncaceae, or the Rush Family, is a rather small (A monocotyledonous flowering plant; the stem grows by deposits on its inside) monocot (Plants having seeds in a closed ovary) flowering plant family.
The rushes of the genus (Type genus of the Juncaceae; perennial tufted glabrous marsh plants of temperate regions: rushes) Juncus have flat, hairless leaves or cylindrical leaves.
The leaves of the wood-rushes of the genus (Click link for more info and facts about Luzula) Luzula are always flat and bear long white hairs.

 Juncaceae (Rush Family)
Of the members of Juncaceae found here, all the stems are round-ish although some may have flat leaves.
Unlike grasses, close examination of Juncaceae flowers reveal distinct flower parts: 3 sepals, 3 petals, 2 to 6 stamens and a pistil with 3 slender styles.
The leaves on Juncaceae are often little more than thin sheaths, sometimes not noticeable at all.

 Biology 434 - Agrostology
Note the characteristic reduced flowers of Juncaceae that still retain flower parts in multiples of three.
The fruit is also very different from any of the other graminoid families in being a capsule that splits open along three sutures and spills out three to many seeds (depending on the species).
Juncaceae is grass-like in habit, but note the flowers are perfect and have the distinct monocot arrangement; the flower parts are in 3's (3 outer sepals, 3 inner petals, 3-6 stamens, and 1 ovary that has three carpels).

The Juncaceae is constituted mainly of one genus, Juncus, of which there are several common species, and another rarely occurring genus, Luzula.
The species of Carex, Scirpus and Juncus are numerous and are adapted to a variety of habitats, from very wet to dry and from exposed to shaded, in which they are invariably associated with each other and with the grasses.

Digging Dog: The Color Encyclopedia of Ornamental Grasses by Rick Darke | Sedges, Rushes, Restios, Cat-tails, and ...
Gardeners usually speak of “ornamental grasses”; in the broad sense, including not only the true grasses, but also related families of grasslike plants, such as sedges and rushes.
Following this tradition, this book provides a detailed treatment of the perennial grasses (Poaceae), sedges (Cyperaceae), rushes (Juncaceae), restios (Restionaceae), and cat-tails (Typhaceae) available to modern gardeners, as well as selected bamboos (Poaceae).
Ornamental grasses are a stunningly versatile group, offering myriad possibilities in the garden limited only by the imagination of the designer.
