Cyperales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Poaceae (grasses) have also been placed here, but are now more often placed in a separate order, correspondingly called the Poales.
Sometimes the order Cyperales is merged into the Juncales.
The recent classification (APG II, 2003) places both Cyperaceae and Juncaceae into Poales, thus effectively obsoleting Cyperales.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Commelinidae -- Spring 1999
The debate about the placement of the Juncales relative to the Commelinidae versus the Liliidae as discussed by Cronquist (1981: 1127) appears to no longer be a concern as the available molecular data firmly position the Juncaceae and the Cyperaceae near the Commelinaceae and Pontederiaceae.
What is interesting from the rbcL data is that both are isolated from the Poaceae as well as what I call the Restionales, and all seem to have some sort of basic ancestral origin from possibly a pre-commelin entity.
The repositioning of the Restionales between the Juncales and Poales, with the Juncales basal of all three is now fully defensible.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Commelinidae -- Spring 1999
I could live with Thorne's (1997, 1999) alignment of Thurniaceae, Juncaceae and Cyperaceae in the Juncales, and the restiod families and Poaceae in the Poales, although I do have a difficulty with assigning Typhaceae to the former order.
Here I feel it is not so much the level of fragmentation of the taxa as the general sequence that is important: Commelinanae, Typhanae and the Juncanae, with the latter proceeding from the Juncales through the Restionales to the Poales.
I concur with Thorne that assigning the Hydatellaceae (Hydatellanae, Hydatellales) to the Poales, as suggested by Bremer and associates can not be supported by morphological and other evidences.

Vessels in Cyperaceae and Gramineae are compared with those in Juncales in a review of vessels in Glumiflorae.
Thurniaceae has most primitive vessels on the average, Juncales has more primitive vessels in leaves and inflorescence axes than does Cyperales; the opposite is true for roots, rhizomes and stems.
Vessels in Graminales on the average are much more specialized than those in Cyperales and Juncales.

An easy way to tell a monocot from a dicot is to look at the venation (pattern of veins) in the leaves.
