 The Land Institute - Annual Report—June 2003
In the winter 2002-03 greenhouse and the summer 2003 field plots, we sowed offspring from hybrids mated with others from the previous year and with winterhardy plants that re-emerged in spring 2002.
In the field, we sowed a summer 2003 crossing nursery that contained three types of sorghum: 1) the best winterhardy plants identified in the springs of 2002 and 2003, 2) the good agronomic (crop-like) lines that we are yield-testing (see above), and 3) the plants treated with nitrous oxide.
In spring 2003 at The Land Institute, NSA fellow Elena Beyhaut of the University of Minnesota established a plot here and began to evaluate bacterial strains for their efficiency in fixing nitrogen in symbiosis with Illinois bundleflower.

The study is especially significant because one of the authors is Paul Shekelle, M.D., Ph.D., who chaired the RAND panel whose favorable 1991 report was a publicity bonanza for the chiropractic profession.
About 40% of the studies the 2003 report considered (including the three best-designed studies) were published after the RAND report was issued.
Although the new report is extremely well reasoned, the American Chiropractic Association has called it a "narrow evaluation of of the available research" and the International Chiropractic Association has called for a Congressional investigation to determine whether the report is part of an illegal conspiracy (which it is not).
