Gun control dies in House - June 18, 1999
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 18) -- An unlikely coalition of gun control advocates and opponents united in the House of Representatives Friday to reject, 280-147, a bill containing many gun control provisions from the Senate's juvenile justice bill, including a watered-down version of the controversial gun-show loophole.
That amendment, added in a late night session Thursday, proved to be the sticking point for many Democrats who have fought for increased gun control legislation since the deadly shooting at Columbine High School in April.
It was the House's late night action on the controversial gun-show loophole provision that drew the most attention Friday morning and ultimately killed the bill.
