Jungfraujoch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Jungfraujoch is a col or saddle between the Mönch and the Jungfrau in the Bernese Alps on the boundary between the cantons of Bern and Valais.
Strictly, the Jungfraujoch is the lowest point on the mountain ridge between Mönch and Jungfrau, at 3,471 metres in height.
The Jungfraujoch is also home to one of the Global Atmosphere Watch's atmospheric research stations.

 Jungfraujoch Railway - Jungfraubahn
The Jungfraujoch Railway has its roots in the mid-1860s, when Swiss hotelier Friedrich Seiler planned to drill a pneumatic tube railway to the summit of the Jungfrau.
Eighty-five years after the first electric train rolled into the Jungfraujoch station, the railroad is still pulling in the crowds.
From the Jungfraujoch the intention was to carry up the line for 2000 ft. more, leaving the summit to be attained by an elevator 242 ft. high, but there does not seem any immediate prospect of completion of this scheme.

 CABO - Jungfraujoch Studies
The international research site at Jungfraujoch in the Swiss Alps (46° 32'53'' N / 07° 59'02'' E / research station: 3,450 m asl / Sphinx Observatory: 3,580 m asl) is located - most of the year - in the lower free troposphere over Continental Europe (Schuepbach et al., 1998a).
Another focus was on an initial experiment on the measurement of peroxy radicals at Jungfraujoch in spring 1996 (FREETEX '96 = FREE Tropospheric EXperiment 1996) with subsequent preliminary modelling of the inlet chemistry (Schuepbach et al., 1996; Zanis et al., 1999b.).
The emphasis in the first year was on the examination of the data quality of the long-term ozone (1986-) record at Jungfraujoch, and on a chemical climatology of ozone (Schuepbach et al., 1998a, Schuepbach et al., 1998b, Zanis et al., 1999a).

The Kiechle Family / Trips / Top of Europe
The Jungfraujoch station itself is inside the mountain; there, a network of tunnels connect the various buildings [7].
Most of the facilities are located on the level of the train station (3,454 meters or 11,332 feet), but if that is not enough, one can take an elevator to go up to the Sphinx observatory at 3,550 meters or 11,647 feet [8].
While the price of a ticket from Interlaken to the Jungfraujoch may seem a bit on the expensive side, we believe that the value for the money is excellent, especially considering that one can easily spend all day on the mountain without running out of things to do.

Two solutions were found for the Jungfraujoch aerosol, an obvious one that failed (Japan) and a hidden one that seemed to succeed (as defined by a good fit made from reasonable signatures).

For HFC 152a, a distinct increase of its concentration magnitude during pollution events was observed from 2000 to 2002, indicating rising European emissions for this compound.
HFCs emission estimates from Jungfraujoch tend to be higher than figures at Mace Head (Ireland) from the end of the 1990s, which either reflects the increased use of these compounds or the closer location of Jungfraujoch to major southern European sources.
The measurement data during the periods when the Jungfraujoch was under the influence of the polluted boundary layer were used in combination with concurrent air mass trajectories to allocate above baseline halocarbon concentrations to specific European source regions.

The area is dominated by the mighty triple crest of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau (Ogre, Monk and Virgin) – three giant peaks rising side-by-side to 4000m and seemingly always mentioned in the same breath.
The Jungfrau is the focus, partly because it’s the highest (at 4158m), and partly because the network of mountain trains from Interlaken Ost culminates at the Jungfraujoch, a saddle below the Jungfrau peak that claims the honour of being the site of the highest train station in Europe.
The ride up to the summit – dubbed the “Top of Europe” – is touted endlessly in Interlaken and beyond as being the highlight of a Swiss visit and, despite the hype, it’s not far wrong.

 Sunphotometry JFJ
The aerosol optical thickness (AOT), which is directly related to the atmospheric aerosol load, is the principal variable describing the effect of aerosols on radiative transfer in the earth’s atmosphere.
The central wavelengths are: 368, 501, 675, 780, 871, and 940 nm (the latter is not used for aerosol research).
These reductions are accomplished when the direct solar irradiance measurements are made in a place where the optical thickness is small (reducing the slope) and invariable (reducing the scatter).
