Map Reading and Land Navigation: Chapter 12 - NAVIGATION IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF TERRAIN: JUNGLE TERRAIN
Jungles are characterized as rainy, humid areas with heavy layers of tangled, impenetrable vegetation.
The jungle is also a paradise for insects, which are the worst enemy of the navigator because some insects carry diseases (malaria, yellow fever, cholera, and so forth).
Terrain analysis, constant use of the compass, and an accurate pace count are essential to navigation in this environment.

Combat in the jungle is characterized by long periods of developing the situation and looking for the enemy; and short periods of violent, and sometimes unexpected, combat.
Jungle terrain favors reduced distances and intervals between troops and units, and the deployment from movement to attack formation as far forward as possible.
In the jungle, the delay is normally conducted in several phases: defense, withdrawal under pressure, breaking contact, and movement to and occupation of new positions where the defense starts again.

Though jungles do not have much effect on the wood in adjacent terrains, they do grow back if left unharvested for a sufficient length of time.

Jungle terrain comes in a couple of flavors - light and heavy - and moving in heavy jungle is every bit as difficult in the game as soldiers found it to be in reality.
Other new terrain types are rice paddies (dry and wet), reefs (water locations that act as barriers to non-tracked amphibians and also retain some ground-like qualities for soldiers in the water), kunai (elephant grass) and tough bunkers.
A couple of significant drawbacks that accompany such attacks are that retreat results are ignored (they reduce strength points instead) and the terrain effects modifier of whatever hex occupied by banzai units is increased slightly (this lessens the effect of the terrain modifier because they are not using cover as effectively).

 ASL DIGEST 7.5
Jungle warfare in modern warfare first surfaced in World War II, and created new tactical problems related to the closeness of the terrain, the difficulty of movement through the terrain, particularly for the modern motorised armies that were dominating the European and North African theatres of war.
Due to the closeness of jungle terrain, and the small land masses of some of the islands, combat unit sizes were smaller than the European standard, with Brigades/Regiments being the larger organization of deployment, whereas in European theatres this would have been Divisional deployment.
In ASL, the movement restrictions of jungle terrain are somewhat lightened for the sake of playability, which is probably a bad thing in that it gives a false impression of jungle movement.
