DVD of the Week: (11/23/2003): Jungle Emperor Leo
Jungle Emperor Leo was adapted from one of Tezuka's comics, and a great deal of his spirit is present in it, but it doesn't quite work -- not nearly as well as the outstanding Metropolis, certainly, which brought us a great many sights unseen and visions undreamed of.
Leo himself has been doing an admirable job, with the occasional word of wisdom from the Earth Mother (a woolly mammoth who comes out of the mist to dispense advice when needed).

JUNGLE TAITEI picks up the story of Leo, the white lion, in adulthood as he maintains his rule over the jungle and helps his wife, Liya, raise their two cubs, Rune and Rukyo, amidst a land teeming with all sorts of wildlife, many of whom eagerly assist the regal Leo, although the elephants frequently dissent.
Eventually, Leo decides to form an alliance with the one good human, Professor Hige Oyaji, who sports a trademark handlebar mustache (and was a character in Tezuka's "Astro Boy" as well), and decides to help him beat the bad humans, led by the greedy Hamegg, to the site of the stones.
A second plot in the newer film involves Leo's precocious male cub, Rune (a dead ringer for Leo/Kimba as a child), who develops a curiosity about all things human after he explores a vegetation-covered ruin of an airplane and finds a music box which proves to be endlessly fascinating to him.

A Review of the Movie, Jungle Emperor Leo.
The Commentary I quoted on the main Jungle Emperor Leo page seems to be written by one who came to this epic for the first time via the movie.
In some ways, the Jungle Emperor Leo movie is noticeably more faithful to the manga story than the latter TV series had been; in other ways -- most notably the relationships between the animals and humans -- it is very different.
In this portion of the story the movie denies its roots because Leo does nothing to drive the humans out of the jungle, nor does he turn to them for help with the disease--at least, not until Rukio is struck with it.
