Fort Sherman / JOTC History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
In November of 1953 the JWTC was attached to the 33rd Infantry; its focus was to train Panama based soldiers in jungle warfare and survival.
The Jungle Operations Committee, of the School of the Americas was separated by the Department of the Army on 1 July 1968, and became the Jungle Operations Training Center (JOTC).
The jungle warfare skills learned and the opportunity for NCOs to test their leadership was undoubtedly very valuable, but a major change initiated in the mid-1970s vastly improved the benefits gained from attendance.

 ALRI Jungle Warfare
Jungle warfare works to modulate hormone production to keep testosterone and estrogen balanced in a way that encourages the body to build more muscle.
Simultaneously, Jungle Warfare optimizes testosterone output, which helps the body bulk up muscles, stimulates the libido, and improves the “fighting spirit.” This will help you feel better and attack your workouts with more enthusiasm.
Although early studies have shown that ALRI Jungle Warfare has a positive impact on women as well as men, there has not been enough research performed on the effects of this compound on women to be able to say with certainty that it is safe and effective for them.

Those who were not born of the jungle can still wage war among the trees, but to do so, they must understand the interconnectedness of all things.
An army that fights in the jungles of Cularin without Tarasin to aid its cause is doomed to fail.
Everything changes, and the eyes that do not know the jungle for what it is, that do not belong to someone who is part of the jungle, will not see through the changes.

Marines have historically been called on to fight in the jungle more than anywhere else — about 80 percent of all conflicts in which they have participated have been in jungle or tropical conditions.
As demonstrated by the Vietnam War and the Battle of Okinawa — one of the last and bloodiest campaigns of World War II — the jungle is a particularly difficult theater for war.
Each year, more than 15,000 military personnel come to Fearing's jungle to experience conditions in foliage so dense that most firefights will take place at a distance of only 15 to 20 feet, and be over in seconds.

Lone Sentry: British Use of Tanks in Jungle Warfare (WWII U.S. Intelligence Bulletin, September 1943)
In jungle warfare, the British unit felt that large numbers of tanks will seldom be able to deploy sufficiently to develop their full fire power, and much of their work will be done in close cooperation with the infantry.
In the frontal attack, in thick jungle, it is unlikely that the tanks will be able to leave roads or trails; therefore not more than one platoon will be used in the attack itself, although more should be available and ready to exploit success.
In the more open spaces in jungle country, the primary role of tanks is to deal with any hostile armored force vehicles that are encountered; the tanks should not be dispersed for reconnaissance missions that can be performed by the motor-battalion carriers or their own armored-car patrols.

 ASL DIGEST 7.5
Jungle warfare in modern warfare first surfaced in World War II, and created new tactical problems related to the closeness of the terrain, the difficulty of movement through the terrain, particularly for the modern motorised armies that were dominating the European and North African theatres of war.
Due to the closeness of jungle terrain, and the small land masses of some of the islands, combat unit sizes were smaller than the European standard, with Brigades/Regiments being the larger organization of deployment, whereas in European theatres this would have been Divisional deployment.
Overall, Allied soldiers and leaders needed jungle training to acclimate themselves to the jungle, and to counter the inferiority to the Japanese that the Allied soldiers felt in the jungle.

And while the jungle sections feature an impressive amount of foliage, the bushes that line your path are bulletproof and impassable.
It's handy for cover, until you realize that the reason you can't hit a guy standing 100 feet away is because your reticule is aiming into a leaf pixel right in front of you, making the shot impossible.
So although it looks like you're fighting in a jungle, all those bushes and trees have the properties of concrete, making for frustrating shots when the enemy is weaving his way through them towards you.
