Junkers Ju 188 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ju 188 Rächer (Avenger) was a high-performance medium bomber from Junkers, the planned follow-on to the famed Ju 88 with better performance and payload.
Although Junker's own Ju 288 was currently leading the contest, there was no delivery date on the engines and the Ju 88B project was re-submitted as a stop-gap measure.

Junkers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unfortunately for Junkers, both the company and the man, the Nazi party came to power in Germany in 1932 and all German aviation development was shifted away from long-range civil aircraft types.
Junkers, who had pioneered commercial aviation development for at least a decade, was relegated to relatively small one- and two-engined military design competitions issued by the RLM (Reichsluftfahrtministerium - "Reich Aviation Ministry").
Within West Germany, Junkers GmbH was engaged in research on the future of aerospace transportation during the fifties and early-1960s.

Junkers had been working as a private venture on an improved Ju 88, and the first interim result of this was the prototype Ju 88B which featured a completely new forward fuselage.
10 pre-production aircraft were built, and these paved the way to the Junkers Ju 188 which featured the new nose, pointed-tip wings with an increase of 2.00 m in span, a new tail unit with the tall, square fin and rudder as used on the Ju 88G and a streamlined dorsal turret.
The first prototype Ju 188 flew in the spring of 1942 with BMW 801MA radial engines, and was followed by the second prototype in January 1943.

 Junkers Ju 88 Fighter Variants
Accordingly, in early summer 1939, Junkers modified the Ju 88 V7 prototype to include a forward-firing armament of two 20 mm MG FF cannon and two 7.9 mm MG 17 machine-guns located in a modified nose section partially covered by metal plates.
Powered by two 1,200 hp Junkers Jumo 211B-1 engines, the unmodified Ju 88 V7 had first flown on 27 September 1938, and was soon back in the air testing the new armament.
The introduction of increasingly heavier armament, more armour, and a radar operator had a detrimental affect on the low-speed handling qualities of the overburdened Ju 88C series, and it was becoming apparent that the development of a specialised Ju 88 night-fighter model was now necessary to restore lost performance and safe handling.

The RLM was in the process of ordering a "second generation" bomber in a project known as Bomber B, but this was extensively delayed due to the non-delivery of the large 2,500hp (1,864 kW) class engines the designs relied on.
For this version they used the latest Ju 88A-1 airframe as a baseline, but added the new Junkers Jumo 213 engine, which had recently started bench testing and was expected to deliver 1,500hp.
In the summer of 1944 three E models were modified as night fighters with the addition of radar and either four 20mm MG 151/20's or two 30mm MK 103's in the nose.

Junkers Ju 388L by Jan Forsgren (Special Hobby 1/72)
The Junkers Ju 388 appeared in the last months of the war as the ultimate operative variant of the Ju 88 family.
The ancestor to the 388, the Ju 188, was developed from the Ju 88B in the end of 1939 but did not reach operational status until the beginning of 1943 after the usual political hassle.
In 1943 Junkers proposed a second generation of Ju 188, the J (night fighter), K (bomber) and L (reconnaissance), but RLM regarded this development so extensive a new designation was necessary: the Ju 388.
