Junkers Ju 388 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Junkers Ju 388J "Störtebeker" was a World War II heavy fighter based on the famous Ju 88 airframe.
The fighter chosen was the Focke-Wulf Ta 152H, based on the Fw 190D with longer wings and the high-altitude E model of the Junkers Jumo 213 engine.
Similar high-altitude modifications to the Junkers Ju 188 were being looked at as the projected 188J, K and L models, which included a pressurized cockpit and wing and elevator de-icing equipment for extended flights at very high altitude, these were re-named Ju 388.

The History of the Ju 388 at Silver Hill
Originally, the Ju 388 L was even called Ju 188 L. Hence, it remains to be clarified whether the fuselage of the 560 049 was a new part or taken from an existing aircraft.
For that purpose, the Ju 388 was flown to Cherbourg/Querqueville on June 17, 1945.
Eventually, the Ju 388 was moved to the National Air and Space Museum's Paul E. Garber facility in Silver Hill.

 Junkers Ju 388
The first prototype Ju 388 V1 reconnaissance version was converted from a Ju 188T-0 at Merseburg, and flown for the first time near the end of 1943.
The Ju 388 V2, V4 and V5 were the fighter prototypes, the V2 having twin 0.79 in (20 mm) and 1.18 in (30 mm) forward-firing cannons in a ventral tray, a remotely controlled tail barbette with a twin 0.51 in (13 mm) machine gun, and carrying a FuG 220 Lichtenstein SN-2 radar.
The Ju 388 V1 was ordered into production and 10 pre-production Ju 388L-0 were converted from Ju 188S-1 airframes in August 1944, with the first of 35 Junkers built Ju 388L-1 being delivered in October 1944; an additional 10 being built by Weser.

Martin Handig and I have been working on a book on the Junkers Ju 388 for several years.
We are still interested in material on the Junkers Ju 388 to fill the few remaining gaps - there are still some areas which are not covered as well as we would like them to be.
We would therefore like to ask all veterans who were involved in the operations "Lusty" and "Sea Horse" to share their experiences with us for further editions of this website and our book.

Junkers Ju 388L by Jan Forsgren (Special Hobby 1/72)
The Junkers Ju 388 appeared in the last months of the war as the ultimate operative variant of the Ju 88 family.
The ancestor to the 388, the Ju 188, was developed from the Ju 88B in the end of 1939 but did not reach operational status until the beginning of 1943 after the usual political hassle.
In 1943 Junkers proposed a second generation of Ju 188, the J (night fighter), K (bomber) and L (reconnaissance), but RLM regarded this development so extensive a new designation was necessary: the Ju 388.

Junkers Ju 388 V2 by Jan Forsgren (Italeri + Toad 1/72)
The Junkers Ju 388 was developed from the Ju 188 as an advanced night fighter intended to replace the Ju 88G in service with the Luftwaffe.
It is believed that at least one of the Ju 388 prototypes was tested operationally by Kommando 388 early in 1945, but naturally it was too late for the 388 to reach series production.
According to the AP Press book the Ju 388 was painted in the “old” bomber splinter scheme of RLM65/70/71 for the Ju 88, even the dedicated night fighter prototypes were painted like this.

Junkers Ju 388 by Christoph Vernaleken and and Martin Handig - Schifferbooks.com
The Junkers Ju 388 was a high-altitude aircraft developed from the Ju 88.
In developing this last member of the Ju 88 family, the Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke was able to draw on a wealth of experience with high-altitude aircraft such as the Ju 49, EF 61 and Ju 86 P/R. The Luftwaffe had great plans for the Ju 388.
With the exception of the Ju 388, all of these aircraft have been dealt with extensively in aviation literature.
