Junkers Ju 187/287 Luft '46 entry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
By the time of the Battle of Britain, the venerable Junkers Ju 87 design was beginning to show some of its shortcomings.
The Ju 187 was to be entirely of metal construction.
The main landing gear was housed in a bulge at the junction of the wing where the angle of the wing changed, and retracted to the rear (also rotating 90 degrees to lay flat under the wings).

Junkers was advised to destroy these JG1 parts due to the construction limitations in Germany.
Nevertheless, Junkers returned to his large aircraft designs in 1924 with Junkers J1000 and in the late 20s with his famous Junkers G38.
The designator Junkers G1 is widely used for this airliner and seems to be the correct one, regarding the later designators G23, G24 and G38 for other "Grossflugzeuge".

For the Ju 87 was a Sturzkampfflugzeug, the German word for dive-bomber, and with deadly effect it was to personify the sterm 'Stuka' for the rest of its career.
The ju 87D-5 introduced an extended wing of 49ft 21, in (15.00m) span, and the D-7 was a specialised night-attack version.
The Ju 87G was essentially a conversion of the long-span D-5, and aircraft of this type were quite successful in knocking out Soviet tanks along the Eastern Front until the appearance of better-class Soviet fighter opposition in the autumn of 1944.

 The Junkers Ju-87 Stuka
Although it was nearing obsolescence even when World War II began, it proved highly successful in the initial German "Blitzkrieg" campaigns, and even today endures as a symbol of Nazi terror, despite the fact that by the middle of the war it was thoroughly out-of-date.
Professor Hugo Junkers, the founder of the firm, had little directly to do with the effort, having been removed from the company in May 1933 for his anti-Nazi views and other reasons.
Manufacturing and engineering for the type was passed on from the Junkers plant in Dessau to the Weser firm, with its plant at the Berlin Tempelhof airport; Weser built 557 Ju-87B-1s.
