The Junkers Ju 52 (nicknamed Tante Ju - "Auntie Ju" - and "Iron Annie") was a transport aircraft and bomber manufactured 1932 1945 by Junkers.
Many Ju 52s were shot down by anti-aircraft guns and fighters while transporting supplies, most notably during the desperate attempt to resupply the trapped German Sixth Army during the final stages of the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943.

 Junkers Ju-52 - Scramble
Developed by Ernst Zindel at the Junkers works at Dessau it retained the all metal fuselage with a corrugated skin of the former types.
Registered as D-2317 and delivered to the Deutsche Verkehrsfliegerschule, but was flown to Sweden in 1932, where it became the SE-ADM with AB Flygindustri who rebuild it as a torpedo-bomber.
After returning to Germany (becoming D-2317 again) it was put on tests -as the Junkers K45c- although it was pretty obvious the type was not suitable for this task.

 Warbird Alley: Junkers Ju 52/3m
During the Spanish Civil War, the Ju 52 ferried more than 10,000 Moorish troops from Morocco to Spain, as well as dropping 6000 tons of bombs.
For air defense and tactical ground support the bomber carried two 7.92 machineguns and could be fitted with a variety of bomb racks as the need arose; the plane's trademark corrugated skin produced a very solid airframe.
By the beginning of World War Two over 1,000 Ju 52’s were in service; eventually a total of 5,000 planes would fly the Nazi colors performing every imaginable mission from troop transport to mine-laying on all fronts.

The forgotten birth of a legend - Bolivian Ju-52s of the Gran Chaco War
Junkers workers at the Dessau factory immediately began to convert airframes (werkenummern: 4008 named "Juan del Valle" and 4009 "Huanuni"), the Ju-52/3m was born.
This led the Bolivian airforce/ LAB personnel who operated the aircraft to take extraordinary precautions such as camouflaging the aircraft but even so the heavy Junkers transports were used a bit conservatively for fear of loosing them to a Paraguayan bombing or strafing attack.
As early as April 1931 Junkers engineers had rigged up a Ju-52/1m with wooden mockups of engine nacelles to investigate the aerodynamic implications of any possible conversion of the Ju-52/1m to a three engine configuration.

 Junker Ju 52/3m
As with most of the famous German aircraft of World War 2 the Ju 52 was designed long before the war and was increasingly outdated as the conflict went on, but kept in production from a lack of a proper replacement.
Professor Hugo Junkers was one of the pioneers of the cantilever monoplane and the idea of an all-metal airplane, a corrugated skin being a trademark of his designs.
A replacement the Ju 252 was designed in 1941 and could have replaced the Ju 52 but unnecessary modifications delayed production so that it did not fly until the end of 1943 and made little impact on the war.

 CASA 352L
Marketing this monoplane aircraft, clearly superior to the wood-and-fabric, or metal frame-and-wood, mostly biplane, competition throughout Europe, was difficult, because of the severe restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles and the Peace Treaties that had settled the conditions of reparations forced on Germany after the Great War of 1914-18.
It made its debut in 1932 and was destined to become one of the best-known European transport aircraft in history, and certainly the one produced in the greatest numbers.
The floatplane version of the Ju 52/3m had maintained the essential communications service along the coast of Norway throughout the Second World War; and is believed to have continued for a few days after the termination of hostilities because no order came through telling that dismembered unit of D.L.H. to stop.
