Like the He 111, the Ju 86 was developed in the 1930s as a commercial airliner and a bomber.
The first combat variant, the Ju 86D, saw action in 1937 in Spain with the Legion Condor, the German air contingent sent by Hitler to support the Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War.
Most Ju 86s, however, had been relegated to training duties by this time, although in 1940 the Ju 86P was introduced.

 Junkers at AllExperts
Unfortunately for Junkers, both the company and the man, the Nazi party came to power in Germany in 1932 and all German aviation development was shifted away from long-range civil aircraft types.
Junkers then adapated the Ju 89 to passenger use, introducing the Junkers Ju 90, one of the first planes specifically designed for scheduled trans-Atlantic flights to the US.
Prior to WWII, it is noted that the Junkers Ju 52 was utilized in the Spanish Civil War, where it took part in the Condor Legion's destructive raids on Durango and Guernica in 1937 which illustrated to the world - for the first time - the destructive potential and horror of strategic bombing.

The prototype of The Ju 86 (D-AHEH) flew for the first time in November 1934, and as early as February 1936 delegates from the Swedish Airforce went to Germany to study the Ju 86.
The probable reason for the Germans releasing the Ju 86 on export, was that the type already in 1936 was considered to be outdated, and was subsequently replaced by the He 111 on all operational German wings.
