Anselm Franz and the Jumo 004
The Junkers Jumo 004 was not the first turbojet invented, nor was the ME 262 the first aircraft to fly under jet power.
In the Jumo 004's inlet section, the diameter of the intake was 20 inches.
The Jumo 004 compressor was an eight-stage unit with an airflow rate of 46.6 pounds per second and an outer casing of uniform diameter.

They were the first German company to offer a truly modern engine in the form of the 650hp Jumo 210, but after a few short years this was considered to be much too small and they responded with the much larger Jumo 211.
Further development of the 211 led to the superb Jumo 213, which was in high demand for practically every late-war piston-engined aircraft.
Their Jumo 004 jet engine was the first to be considered production quality and used in the Me 262 jet fighter.

This was a high-winged conventional-looking design with a Junkers Jumo 004[?] engine under each wing.
However the Jumo 004 engines weren't ready, and wouldn't be ready until February 1943.
Like all jet engines, the fuel consumption of the Jumos varied widely with altitude; at 10,000m it was a third of what it was at sea level.

The Jumo 004 was further developed and became the RD-10 which was fitted in the Jak-15, La-150 and Su-9.
In France the Jumo 004 and BMW 003 were studied and fitted into the Sud-Est S.O. 6000 "Triton" and the Arsenal VG-70.
As with the Fw Ta183, a Junkers Jumo 004 was intended to be fitted in the V-1 as the He S 011 engine was not ready.

The Junkers Ju 87 Stuka was one of the most effective of the Luftwaffe's sublime aerial weapons and was used often for bombing attacks.
Some of the operations the Junkers Ju 52 took part were also in the Spanish Civil War, where it took part in the Condor Legion's destructive raids on Durango and Guernica in 1937.

Junkers was an industrialist, owning a factory in the city of Dessau, Germany, that built steam boilers and heating equipment.
This experience spurred Junkers to decide that aircraft of the future would be built entirely of metal—and would be monoplanes.

The Jumo 004 was typical of early jet engines in that it was rather heavy, and not especially efficient.

One interesting feature of the 004 was the starter system, which consisted of a Riedel 10 hp (7 kW) 2-stroke motorcycle engine hidden in the intake.
Jumo 004 copies were also built in the Soviet Union as the RD-10 engine, where they powered the Yakovlev Yak-15 as well as many prototype jet fighters.
The Junkers Jumo 004 is perhaps the only aero engine to feature in popular music, being referenced in the lyrics to the Blue ×yster Cult\'s "ME 262" from the 1974 album, Secret Treaties.

The E370 was to be a sleek, high-winged aircraft powered by a pair of Junkers Jumo 004 turbojets, one under each wing.
Junkers began work on a heavy jet bomber in 1943, at first focusing on a design with swept-back wings with a 25-degree sweep.
It was powered by four Junkers Jumo 004B turbojets, with one engine attached to each side of the fuselage behind the cockpit, and one engine slung under the rear of each wing.

The first test flights began in April 1941, but since the BMW 003 turbojets were not ready for fitting, a conventional Junkers Jumo 210 engine was mounted in the nose, driving a propeller, to test the Me 262 V1 airframe.
When the BMW 003 engines were finally installed the Jumo was retained for safety which proved wise as both 003s failed during the first flight and the pilot had to land using the nose mounted engine alone.
The Jumo 004 was more reliable, but it also caused problems since the Me 262 had to compete with the Arado Ar 234 for the engines.

In the middle of 1944, the Junkers aircraft company worked on a project for a low-level ground attack aircraft to replace the Henschel Hs 129 ground attack aircraft.
As a consequence of the secondary compressed airflow circuit, the intake and overall diameter of the engine was larger than the BMW 003 or Jumo 004 jet engines.
Armament was to consist of one MK 103 30mm cannon in the nose and two MG 151/20 20mm cannon in the lower wing roots.

BMW 003 - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Work on its design began earlier than the contemporary Junkers Jumo 004 engine, but prolonged developmental problems meant that the BMW 003 entered production much later, and the aircraft projects that had been designed with it in mind had been re-engined with the Jumo powerplant instead.
The most famous case of this was the Messerschmitt Me 262, and the same was true of the Arado Ar 234 and Gotha Go 229.
With the new designation 109-006 the improved engine was flight tested under a Junkers Ju 88 in October 1943 and was finally ready for mass production in August 1944, in time only to power last-ditch projects like the He 162.

The Jumo jet engines had a life-time of only ten hours mainly due to the use of steel instead of rare metals (such as chromium) which would have stood up better to the extremely high temperatures of the turbo-jet but were very scare.
A Jumo 004 was first flight tested in late 1941, mounted underneath a Messerschmitt Bf 110 aircraft.
Other Jumo 004 versions were planned (C, D-4 &E) which had various improvements on the B version, including throttle regulators, two-stage fuel injection, increased thrust and shorter tail pipes.

Popularly known as Tante Ju ('Auntie Junkers') or 'Iron Annie', the Ju 52/3m trimotor was the most significant Luftwaffe transport of the war, serving on all fronts and in all major actions.
In October of 1942 it was apparent that the advanced Ju 288 bomber and the Jumo 222 engine designed for it were not going to be available anytime soon so work began on an interim aircraft.
Unfortunately continual delays in getting the Jumo 222 engines and numerous modifications and changing requirements kept this promising bomber in the development and testing until the entire program was cancelled in early 1944.

All design work had to be based on the known dimension of the Jumo 004B, it's intended power plant, but could progress no further by 1/44 owing to the lack of detailed information relating to the engine and it's installation.
In the meantime, much of the rear fuselage, wing spars, ribs, undercarriage and the cockpit were built but because of the inability to obtain adequately detailed information relating to the Jumo 004B the work once again stalled.
They were then shipped to the U.S.A. It is interesting to note that the two Jumo 004B engines were sent to Italy, but never made it to the Regianne designers and allegedly were sold for scrap in Milan immediately after the collapse of the German forces in Italy.

The engines were to be two turbojets which were currently in development (the Junkers Jumo 004) and installed in nacelles suspended under the semi-wings.
Due to the narrowness of the fuselage, and also to comply with the German Air Ministry's requirement for a range of 2,150 km (1,340 miles), it was decided to initially configure the aircraft with three skids (one on the belly and two beneath the engine nacelles) rather than the traditional approach of using landing gear.
Junkers (as well as BMW) were having many difficulties with their new turbojets.

Junkers Jumo 004 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 004A was strictly a test-bed, unsuitable for mass production due to its solid, and thus heavy, construction and considerable use of expensive high-temperature metals in the "hot section".
The 012 was based on a "two-spool" system, in which two turbines, spinning at different speeds, drove two separate sections of the compressor for more efficiency.
Plans were also underway to use the 012's basic concept in an engine outwardly identical to the 004, known as the 004H, which improved specific fuel consumption from the 004B's 1.39 kg/(km/h) to a respectable 1.20 kg/(km/h), a decrease of about 15%.

Since the planned BMW 003 turbojets were not ready at this time, a conventional Jumo 210 twelve cylinder mounted in the nose was used for power in order to test the airframe.
Later when the BMW 003 engines were installed a test flight took place which resulted in both turbojets failing and the pilot bringing the plane in on the nose mounted engine alone.
