The Junkers Jumo 205 aircraft engine was the most famous of a series of diesel engines that were the first, and for more than half a century, the only successful diesel aircraft engines.
The Jumo 205 powered the early versions of the Junkers Ju 86 bomber, but was found too unresponsive for combat and liable to failure when used at maximum power as is common for combat aircraft.
The Jumo 203 and 204 were licensed to Napier & Son, who built a small number as the Napier Culverin just prior to the war.

Jumo 205A, 205B and 205C designators were used for Jumo 5A, 5B and 5C and offered only a few technical improvements.
The use of the Jumo 205 in military aircraft, like the Ju86 failed, as these aircraft were used at their power limits, which result in a lot of engine failures.
As Dornier had gained good experiences about the Jumo 205 in their aircraft, a proposal was made to equip a few boats with a maritime version of the Jumo 205.

 Diesel Engine
Both the Jumo and Deltic engines used one piston per cylinder to expose an intake port, and the other to expose an exhaust port.
In the Jumo 205 and its variants, the upper crankshaft serves the exhaust pistons, and the lower crankshaft the intake pistons.
Junkers Jumo 223 and the Deltic, each big end bearing serves one inlet and one exhaust piston, using a forked connecting rod for the exhaust piston.

The first flight with a Junkers Diesel Oil engine was performed on 30th August 1929 with a Junkers F24 (c/n 832) enroute from Dessau to Cologne.
As problems were rising during the type certification of the Jumo 4, which also reduced the maximum power, available from this engine, further trials and improvements were made on the engine after certification.
Compared to the Jumo 4, the pistons of the Jumo 204 got crowns of heat resistent steel It offered more power on same turn rates and was higher pressured.

The Junkers Jumo 223 was an experimental 24-cylinder aircraft engine based on the Junkers Jumo 205.
It is rumoured to have been taken to Moscow after the war, where development may have continued.
The Jumo 223 was in some ways the predecessor of the successful three-crankshaft Napier Deltic engine.

Popularly known as Tante Ju ('Auntie Junkers') or 'Iron Annie', the Ju 52/3m trimotor was the most significant Luftwaffe transport of the war, serving on all fronts and in all major actions.
In October of 1942 it was apparent that the advanced Ju 288 bomber and the Jumo 222 engine designed for it were not going to be available anytime soon so work began on an interim aircraft.
Unfortunately continual delays in getting the Jumo 222 engines and numerous modifications and changing requirements kept this promising bomber in the development and testing until the entire program was cancelled in early 1944.

 PANZERS WEEKLY Vol. 2, No. 4 ~ Nov. 19 - 25, 2000
It would be fair to say that the Junkers Ju 86 was already obsolescent at the beginning of World War II, and was accepted rather grudgingly by the Luftwaffe, which preferred the Heinkel He 111.
Meanwhile, modifications to the military models resulted in the Jumo 205C-engined Ju 86D-1, five of which served with the Legion Condor during the Spanish Civil War, but the diesel engines were not standing up well to combat conditions and the aircraft had proved markedly inferior to the He 111.
Junkers had been experimenting for some time with a high-altitude version of the Jumo diesel engine, together with pressure cabin design, and in 9/39 submitted proposals for a high-altitude reconnaissance version of the Ju 86.

The Ju 86A bomber was powered by a pair of 510 hp Junkers Jumo 205C-4 liquid-cooled Diesel engines.
The Jumo 205C Diesel proved to be particularly unsuitable as a powerplant for bomber aircraft --- it did not take kindly to sudden changes in r.p.m, and lost power rapidly at altitudes above 16,500 feet.
The powerplant was the Jumo 207A-1 six-cylinder Diesel, which was a high-altitude version of the Jumo 205 equipped with a pair of centrifugal superchargers mounted in series.

Other engines have used the same ported arrangement as the gasoline two-stroke, although the charge air is generally delivered under pressure from a blower through ducting rather than through the crankcase.
Examples are the Junkers Jumo 205 and Napier Deltic high-speed opposed piston engines.
A third pattern uses the induction method of the gasoline two-stroke, but with an exhaust valve in the cylinder head.

"Jumo" Diesel engines delivered full sealevel power up to 40,000 feet and powered aircraft flying at 50,000 feet.

 Internal combustion engine - Gurupedia
Multiple-crankshaft configurations do not necessarily need a cylinder head at all, but can instead have a piston at each end of the cylinder, called an opposed piston design.
This design was used in the Junkers Jumo 205 diesel aircraft engine, using two crankshafts, one at either end of a single bank of cylinders, and most remarkably in the
Napier Deltic diesel engines, which used three crankshafts to serve three banks of double-ended cylinders arranged in an equilateral triangle with the crankshafts at the corners.

The Germans did field several diesel-powered aircraft beginning in the 1920s through the end of the war.
The most well-known turbocharged version, a Junkers JUMO 205, enabled the reconnaissance aircraft it powered to operate at an unprecedented 50,000 feet.
By the mid-1950s, many major diesel engine manufacturers began experimenting with, and ultimately offering, turbos for truck and other large power plants.
