At least one source claims that the phrase ‘junketing’ was coined by the parties of people that would travel from London to Devon, ostensibly to enjoy junket or curds and whey with clotted cream heaped on top of the coagulated milk, but which were just as likely to involve alcoholic consumption.
A ‘junket’, as a consequence, became a synonym for a festive social trip.
Currently, junket tablets are available in either flavoured or unflavoured forms, and the flavours include strawberry, vanilla, raspberry, pineapple, cherry and fruit salad.
Today, as you say, "junket" is used to mean a festive social affair, or, more commonly, a trip, especially a trip taken by a politician and paid for by taxpayers.
A "press junket" is a sponsored trip offered to journalists, either to accompany a gallivanting politician or to visit a corporate facility or the like.

Jalopnik took a junket from Audi to do a test drive for—you guess it— their sponsor Audi.
Let me translate that for you: Siemens was considering giving their poduct information to the press as we always do, but we figured why bother sending out press releases when we can put them directly on Gizmodo.
It’s interesting that they disclose the junket, but not the terms of their junket.
