Snide Remarks - I Was a Junket Whore - www.ericdsnider.com - The Official Website of Eric D. Snider
Whereas I am delighted to have such a swanky room in a swell hotel, junket whores are accustomed to it.
The thing is, I was so humiliated to be among the whores, and to be partaking of their whorish ways, that I compounded my whorishness by lying to Sean.
I'm told the hardcore Hollywood junkets, where all the whores come to the studio instead of the studio traveling around to whores, usually have gift bags for the whores to take home to remind them of their pleasant experience.

Movie junket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A studio that produces a movie (or its marketing partner) invites several journalists/entertainment writers to see it before its release, then gives them the opportunity to interview its stars.
A negative review is likely to inhibit the studio from inviting its author to future junkets.
Some consider movie junkets a practice in which journalism and marketing merge to a dangerous point.

Quote whore - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Quote whore" or "blurb whore" is a clearly pejorative term used by some movie reviewers to describe other critics who provide reviews well in advance of a movie's release and whose reviews are uniformly positive.
Many "quote whores" are perceived as sharing positive, quotable reviews in exchange for free junkets, food, movie-related trinkets and other items of value—or, indeed, free advertising for their own publication.
One reviewer who was widely labeled a quote whore was David Manning, whose quotations often appeared on promotional posters for Columbia Pictures.

The Hot Blog: I Went To The WTC Junket And All I Got Was This Lousy Attitude
Snider trying, somewhat hamfistedly (the word “whore” loses its effect after the 73rd use in one piece), to take the piss out of Paramount and the entire junket system is Paramount and their Seattle/Portland rep taking Snider off their screening lists.
In fact, when push comes to shove, his predisposition against the junket in the form of assuming all dumb gossip questions, is negated and he seems okay with the journalists involved (though he still keeps calling them whores).
I don't think Eric wrote his "junket whore" article to gain notoriety, or out of naivety, or as a raised middle finger to Paramount or the studios as a whole, as some commenters have suggested.

It seems to me that the reason Paramount was so unhappy with your article was because of your frequent use of the terms “junket whore” throughout the article.

In case you're not familiar with the junket, it's one of the perks that come along with being an entertainment writer.

Dittman has been asked to defend himself in the past, and has even admitted that about half of the junkets he goes on are paid for by studios, but he insists that his reviews aren't influenced by this special treatment.

Also, the reviewer would be seeing the film with people who really wanted to view it, not with passholes there only for the free t-shirt and bragging rights.
Cost conscious studios would save millions a year by canceling these screenings and even dropping the junkets, although they would probably have a jones over the evaporation of puff pieces in every publication from Vanity Fair to Parade (whose reporters get special treatment, anyway).

The phrase “junket whore” never quite made it into my vernacular until about my fourth or fifth press day.
It was about that time when I began to put together the correlation between the people who’d ask the vapid, innocuous questions at the roundtables were the same people who took particular delight in raiding the hospitality room for all its free food, drink and assorted paraphernalia.
Their claim is that the studios foot most, if not all, of the bills these reporters incur on the junkets, as well as provide per diems, gifts and the chance to meet with celebrities, and as such should acknowledge that those providing the testimonials received such benefits.
