The Juno Awards are awards of achievement presented to Canadian musical artists and bands; they could be considered the transnational counterpart to the United States' Grammy Awards.
Alanis Morissette with a Juno Award Organized by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the awards began in 1964 and were presented by RPM Magazine as the 'Gold Leaf Awards', with the winners chosen by a poll of the magazine's readers.
In 1971, these were renamed the 'Juno Awards', a name derived from the god Juno of Roman mythology and from Pierre Juneau, the first head of the Canadian Radio-Television Commission.

In June 1999, Cochrane was involved in a light plane crash in Montreal, after one of the wings came off in a grove of trees.
At the 2003 Juno Awards, Tom Cochrane was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
The special award ceremony took place April 5, 2003 at Casino du Lac-Leamy in Ottawa, Ontario.

The band formed in Norwood, Ontario in 1997, although band members had been playing together since they were 14.
Their debut album Three Days Grace made the Canadian Top Ten album chart and reached the Top 100 of the Billboard 200, as well as number one on the Billboard Heatseeker charts.
Producer Gavin Brown, formerly of the band Big Sugar, won a Juno Award in the Juno Awards of 2004 for his production of the album and his work on Try Honesty by the band Billy Talent.

The JUNO nominated CD 'Hymn to the Earth' marked the first recording of this concept.

Shania won 2 ACM awards, for Best New Female Vocalist, and Best Album for "The Woman In Me." And yes, in the view of many (certainly all her fans), she deserved Single and Female Vocalist awards as well...
Skimming past the 1996 "Blockbuster Awards" -- yes Shania won for "Favorite New Country Artist" ("nomination criteria" was sales within the chain, where "WIM" was largely not on sale while the "other nominees" all were -- Shania was "excluded" from even being on the "female artist" ballot, despite outselling those nominees put together).
Thanks SO MUCH to all you great Canadian fans who did vote for Shania as 1996 Juno "Entertainer of the Year," a richly deserved award that surely helped her feel better (from her virus) and hints at the depth of your appreciation for her as an incredible woman and mega-star performer.

The Juno Awards has confirmed in a press release that Neil Young will perform at the ceremony.
When Winnipeg was chosen as the site of the 2005 Juno Awards, the city's mayor, Glen Murray, said it was his "dream" to have Young attend the show.

These awards began in 1970, when organizers Stan Klees and Walt Grealis, who published RPM, a weekly music trade publication, held the Gold Leaf Awards in the St. Lawrence Hall in Toronto.
A year later, the event changed its name to the Juno Awards, at the suggestion of reader Hal Philips, who asked that the magazine honour Pierre Juneau, the then head of the CRTC, which had implemented the Canadian Content Regulations in 1971.
When it was discovered that Juno had been the Chief Goddess of the Roman Pantheon, the spelling was changed and the awards permanently named.
