A protégé of Quincy Jones, he rivalled Jones as Los Angeles' leading producer during the early 1980s, making his reputation on the basis of the aggressive role he took in the studio in the writing (or rewriting) and arranging of material.
Foster also won Juno Awards as producer of the year in 1985 for Chicago 17 and in 1986 for the soundtrack of St Elmo's Fire ; his instrumental Love Theme from the US film was popular in 1985.
Foster received Juno Awards 1986-7 and 1989 as best instrumental artist, and was elevated to the Juno Hall of Fame in 1998.

He was "introduced" at Carnegie Hall, New York City in 1949 by Norman Granz; owing to union restrictions his appearance could not be billed.
In 1997 he received a Grammy for Lifetime Achievement and an International Jazz Hall of Fame Award, proof that Oscar Peterson is still regarded as one of the greatest jazz musicians ever to play.
He also belongs to the Juno Awards Hall of Fame and the Canadian Jazz and Blues Hall of Fame.

The academy, which produces the annual Juno Awards, would like the new facility to be a musically themed educational and cultural entertainment complex as well as a tourist attraction, like the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland or Toronto's Hockey Hall of Fame.
Though the Hall of Fame will feature travelling exhibits, Reynolds said that greater emphasis would be placed on displays and demonstrations in which visitors can participate.
