Junyo, first of a class of two 24.100-ton aircraft carriers, was built at Nagasaki, Japan.
She was begun as the civilian passenger liner Kashiwara Maru but was taken over by the Japanese Navy in 1940, while still on the shipways, and converted to a carrier.
As one of four large aircraft carriers remaining after the Midway action, Junyo was an important unit of the Japanese fleet during the next two years, even though she had a lower speed (about 23 knots) and smaller air group (about fifty planes) than built-for-the-purpose fleet carriers.

Junyo Maru was an old three-island, single-stack merchantman, displacing about 5,000 tons and sailing under the orders of the Japanese government.

When I was undergoing therapy with Professor Bastiaanse, I read in the newspaper about a commemoration of the Junyo Maru.
In 1986, I asked my mother to come with me to the commemoration of the Junyo Maru, and since then we often go together.
The Junyo Maro commemorations are more intimate than the general commemorationfor the war in Asia.

Over 5600 perished in the waters off southwest Sumatra, making this the largest maritime disaster of the war if not of all time.
They were all bound for work on the 220km long Sumatra Railway Line between Pakan Baru and Muaro, through steaming jungle.
From May to September 1944 the Japanese threw into this inhospitable corner of the earth over 5,000 Allied prisoners who had been captured on Java two and half years earlier. The survivors of the Junyo Maru ended up there.

In remembrance of my grandfather Theodoor Pinchetti and the thousands of other people who went down with the Junyo Maru, one of many Japanese "Hell Ships".
POWs were crammed with little or no water or food into stinking holds, filthy with coal dust, congealed sugar syrup or horse manure left over from previous voyages.
But the Japanese did not recognize these rules of war, so the ship was not marked and thus became a legitimate target.
