Jurat vs. Acknowledgements - Which One??
Jurat notarizations are required for transactions where the signer must attest to the content of the document, such as all affidavits and pleadings in court.
In executing a jurat, a notary guarantees that the signer personally appeared before the notary, was given an oath or affirmation by the notary attesting to the truthfulness of the document, and signed the document in the notary's presence.
It is always important that the notary positively identify a signer for a jurat, as s/he is certifying that the signer attested to the truthfulness of the document contents under penalty of perjury.

He was a jurat in 1363/64 and from 1371-74, and one of the constables (an office reflecting his importance in the community) from 1370 on; the appointment of someone else to his constabulary in 1382 probably marks his death.
He was jurat for most of the period from 1350 to 1368, and served the king as Deputy Butler at Lynn from 1347 to 1350, with a brief overlapping stint as collector of tunnage and poundage (1350-51).
He appears to have been a jurat for the entire period from 1342 to 1376, with the exception of the years when he served as king's bailiff (1348/49) or mayor (1345/46, 1362/63, 1368/69) and possibly 1343-45 and 1351/52 (for which years we have no record of who was jurat).

A jurat is different from an acknowledgment and is, therefore, considered to be a separate notarial act.
A jurat, on the other hand, requires more than the acknowledgment of a signature -- the signer must additionally swear or affirm that the signed document is true.

While an acknowledgment serves to certify the signer's identity and willingness to sign a particular document, a jurat, on the other hand, certifies that the signer has sworn to or affirmed the truthfulness of the statements in the signed document.
Notaries usually execute jurat on documents such as affidavits and depositions that may be submitted as evidence in trials and other official proceedings, as well as on other forms of written verification requiring an oath or affirmation.
The purpose of a jurat is to compel truthfulness by appealing to the signer's conscience and fear of criminal penalties for perjury.

Thus, by law the self-assessment of individual income taxes is made by willfully executing the prescribed jurat of a completed Form 1040 which declares and affirms the information thereon is based upon the knowledge and belief of the person(s) signing it.
It is clearly illegal to coerce someone acting in his or her personal capacity to sign under penalties of perjury a document that conflicts with the individual's knowledge and or belief.
If an individual acting in his or her personal capacity may be coerced to sign under penalties of perjury a statement that he or she does not believe to be true, the purpose of the perjury statutes is defeated and in such case he/she could not be justly convicted of perjury.
