Jurgen Schrempp, the chairman of Germany’s DaimlerChrysler, will this week face a courtroom showdown with Kirk Kerkorian, the billionaire casino operator who was formerly the biggest shareholder in Chrysler, in a bizarre case of alleged deceit.
In court on Tuesday, Mr Schrempp attempted to explain the context for his remarks to the FT: "We were in an extremely difficult situation, we were hammered by the media for the performance of the company, particularly Chrysler and there was talk all around that the merger hadn't worked," he said.
Jurgen Schrempp on Wednesday said Chrysler had been an operational "division" of DaimlerChrysler from the moment the 1998 merger had been completed, but insisted that a "merger of equals" at the corporate level was successfully achieved.
