 Björling - Life and Career - Borlänge kommun
Jussi Björling was born in 1911 in Borlänge in the Swedish province of Dalarna, 220 km NW of Stockholm.
At one of these radio concerts, Jussi sang the "Nessun dorma" of which the end is heard here (not to be confused with his studio recording of the aria from the same year).
In October 1945, Jussi Björling returned to the USA after the war for an 8-month tour, and in the next years he spent a large part of the year in America, singing in opera and concert.

Johann Jonatan - Jussi - Björling was born on February 5th 1911 in Stora Tuna, Sweden, son of a tenor (who had made an appearance at the MET) and one among many talented brothers, toghether with whom he formed the Bjoerling Male Quartet, led by his father.
Jussi Björling came to be the only and unique non-Latin tenor that could rival the Italian dominance in the tenor heritage and he appeared while such grand and famed tenors as Martinelli, Schipa, Gigli and Lauri-Volpi were still present and active.
Jussi Björling received immense popularity during the course of his career, residing as one of the most important tenors at the Met during the 40's and the 50's.

The eminent tenor Jussi Björling was born in 1911 in Borlänge, Sweden.
The group performed in concerts throughout Sweden and the United States for ten years, and Jussi received vocal training from John Forsell at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm.
He made is operatic debut in 1930 at the Royal Theater of Stockholm as the Lamplighter in Manon Lescaut, and began to sing in the major opera venues in Europe, including the Vienna State Opera, and the Dresden State Opera.

As children, Jussi and his brothers received a thorough musical training from their father.
In 1915, Jussi and two of his brothers Olle and Gösta, made their first public appearance as a singing trio of boy sopranos.
From 1919 to 1921, David and his three sons, called the Björling Male Quartet, toured Swedish communities in the United States, and it was in New York that Jussi, at the age of nine, made his first recordings with his two brothers.

By that time Jussi had already made his first broadcast (1928) and his first gramophone recording as a tenor (he was 18 years old!).
At home in Sweden, Jussi had signed his first permanent contract with the Royal Opera in 1931 and spent his next years concentrating on learning a large number of major and minor roles in a broad repertoire (all sung in Swedish).
Jussi remembered his father saying “Don’t adopt a needless pose when singing but let the aria/song come naturally as you feel it.” A lesson that Jussi gives evidence of having taken to heart.

Jussi Björling (Born: February 5, 1911 and Died: September 9, 1960) has always retained a special position among operatic tenors.
But coming from a "pre" superstar period in the first half of the twentieth century, and not known for displaying his ego, he was unlike many tenors.
This was the case in the Classic CD Magazine (July 1999) out of London, which named Björling, "the greatest singer of the twentieth century." He was also voted the number one tenor of all time in Classic FM Magazine (January 2001), with Placido Domingo chosen as second and Luciano Pavarotti, third.
