Topic: Justice (TNG episode)

Justice (TNG episode) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Justice" is a first season episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, first broadcast November 9, 1987.
During this episode, Picard calls him "son", which some consider was a bit of foreshadowing on Gene Roddenberry's part.
Yet another episode where Picard debates the Prime Directive, yet they contact the Edo despite the fact that at that point there is no evidence they have space travel or know anything about other life beside their own.

This episode summary has been identified as lacking essential detail, and as such needs attention.
This episode was not aired in the United Kingdom during the series' first run because of the "near nude" appearance and highly hedonist culture of the Edos.
Since there is no evidence that the Edo culture have advanced to the point of warp technology, and they seem to show a very primitive understanding of space, it does not fit with the Prime Directive that the Enterprise crew would interact at all with the planet's inhabitants.

While its rules are simple, and only one punishment zone exists at any given time, anyone who breaks the law in such a zone is immediately executed, no matter what the crime.
Eventually, Picard manages to convince the Edo god that "there can be no justice so long as laws are absolute," and is allowed to take Wesley back.
"Justice" - When Wesley is sentenced to death for innocently violating a foreign planet's customs, Captain Picard is forced to choose between negotiating for Wesley's life or adhering to the Federation's prime directive which prohibits interfering with another civilization's way of life.

Later in the episode, Picard quotes from Williams' speech, which is from "Henry V 4.1.142-144".
The two-hour movie was shown as the first episode of TNG, the repeat was shown as a two-part episode.

An interesting episode on several levels, this is another of those that suffered a little from a lack of subtlty.
He argues that Justice must take precedence over law - but even if that were true in the Federation, it is not true on the Edo world (and it isn't true in the present day for that matter), and it is Edo law that applies.
Yar tells Picard at the start of the episode that she has fully reviewed the local laws.

In this episode he plays a trick on the crew in his attempt to escape.
Q is causing Captain Picard to shift through time in the final leg of the trial of humanity.

Oh well.) This was another success in the lines of TOS's "Court-Martial" and TNG's "The Measure of a Man" in that it managed to get tons of tension crammed into a very small room.
TNG is giving me more and more of a serialized impression, and "The Drumhead" was a very good example of that.
Worf was expertly written and expertly played--as soon as the little bit about Tarses's grandfather came out, I just knew Worf would take that (both the ancestry and his refusal to answer any further questions) as "all but" an admission of guilt.

But this episode is also interesting for its several moments of true connection between Sisko and Dukat, who at one point even speak to one another of their respective sons.
After the second season episode "Tribunal", "Defiant" was the first to address the Maquis issue, that startet earlier on at season two, in the episode "The Maquis".
The episode isn't very rich in the plot department, being more baced on conflicts between characters and the political aspects of the series, being more of a cat-and-mouse kind of episode.

It's by no means the worst of TNG - sure the premise is a bit preposterous in both the accident and the ease of the Ferengi takeover of the ship but there is still much to like.

This was the foundation of the concept of justice, that it is "fair" and "just" to punish someone to a degree equal to the wrong he has done.
Whether it is described as "an eye for an eye" as in the Mosaic law or as seven days in jail for disorderly conduct, there is a sense under retributive theory that "the punishment fits the crime", that that which is done to the criminal pays for that which the criminal has done.
Advocates of this view, hailed as the future of criminal justice, claim that retribution is just a nice word for vengeance, and that we ought not pretend that revenge is justice.

Portal, disenchanted with the Ferengi's barbaric and warlike responses to his inquisition, is intrigued by Commander Riker's wisdom.
With the cast and crews still learning to work with each other and their technology, there was undoubtedly a 'settling in' period where many of the techniques used to film the show hadn't been created yet, and "The Last Outpost" shows this much more than the episodes before and after.
There are several miscues, both for the actors and for the sound and special effects, and much of the camera work seems jerky and cut awkwardly.

In this key episode to the Star Trek Universe Picard's crew finds evidence that four billion years ago the first humanoid civilization explored our galaxy, and they were disappointed because they found themselves alone.
TNG: "The Chase" sufficiently explained why most of the sentient lifeforms are humanoid.
It is obvious that human-looking aliens may help save make-up budget and time and that aliens with few make-up are easier to play by the actors.
