Environmental Justice | American Lung Association of California
The environmental justice movement started in 1982 when a predominately African American community in the south fought the development of a hazardous-waste landfill in their neighborhood.
A study of eight southern states was conducted to determine the correlation between the location of hazardous landfills and the racial and economic status of the surrounding communities.
The American Lung Association of California recently funded a project to determine the health impact on farmers (see related story under Research Matters), but the association doesn't have the resources it would take to fund the larger research projects needed to really understand how these communities are being impacted.

The British Educational Research Association (BERA) sets out to be the voice of educational research in the UK and so tries to provide an arena for discourse between: researcher and researcher, researcher and teacher, and researcher and policy-maker.
Featuring research in the media is a rather indirect way of trying to influence policy and practice, but we see it as a way of creating a culture which values research in public affairs.
Such a research culture is desperately needed if the educational systems of the UK (and the world) are to meet the aspirations of society.
