Justin Lin's tale will sound remarkably familiar to countless aspiring filmmakers who have paid their dues by maxing out their credit cards and spending sleepless nights starving while wondering if their projects will ever reach the screens.
Fortunately for Lin, his gamble was a success and his solo debut feature, Better Luck Tomorrow (Lin had previously co-directed Shopping for Fangs with filmmaker Quentin Lee), received both critical acclaim and a distribution deal with MTV films.
Lin also worked closely with youth in teaching sports and media, a job that found his interest in the mindset of the younger generation growing.

To further aid Lin in his research, Universal paid for a trip to Japan, where the director got a crash course in the history and culture of drifting, a form of racing most commonly practiced on twisty roads, where the person behind the wheel is essentially driving sideways.
While Lin is entirely aware that this isn't a groundbreaking narrative, he claims to have enjoyed the challenge (there's that word again) of taking an oft-told tale and making it seem fresh.
According to Lin, early drafts of the screenplay did try to make room for Walker and/or Diesel, but by the time he signed on to direct, the decision had been made to push ahead with new faces.

Lin confirms that the stars from "The Fast and the Furious" and its sequel, "2 Fast 2 Furious" (including Walker, Diesel, Eva Mendes and Ludacris), won't be a part of the third installment, and that the only true link between the three films will be the cars themselves.
Lin, a cinema-savvy director with a fondness for Leone's classic "Man With No Name" trilogy, says the battle between Shaun and a villain racer known as the "Drift King" will have echoes of the classic battles in "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and the other films.
Lin promises that casting announcements will be made over the next couple of months, and that the film will stay on target for a June 16, 2006 release.

Director Justin Lin (Better Luck Tomorrow) keeps the pace swift and the visuals snappy, particularly in the boxing scenes.
Lin does inject a little tension into the forcefully integrated cast - particularly during the training sessions and there's some real frenetic energy infused into the fight scenes - there's also lots of muscled eye candy - but the film never manages to find a single surprise in the script or rise above the ordinary.

Suicide Girls recently spoke to director Justin Lin for the release of "Annapolis" and discussed his plans on directing the remake of Park Chan Wook's "Oldboy".
Lin says "Right now we're so far away from it being a reality.
I love that film and the only reason I wanted to explore that avenue is because it really spoke to me. I didn't sign on to make a Xerox copy of the original because it's a masterpiece.
