Marshall began his rugby union career with Southland and was then asked to join Christchurch by Canterbury coach Vance Stewart.

The appeal was against a two-match suspension handed down by the SANZAR Judicial Committee on Sunday which found Marshall guilty of stomping during the Crusaders' match against the NSW Waratahs on 5 April 2003.
