The Argentine dictator, general, and statesman Justo José Urquiza (1801-1870) was an ardent federalist and all his life fought against the dominance of the province of Buenos Aires at the expense of the interior provinces.
Justo José Urquiza was born on Oct. 18, 1801, in Arroyo de la China, in the province of Entre Rios.
Urquiza became involved in the civil wars of the 1820s on the side of the provinces and rose rapidly in rank under Governor Echague.

URQUIZA, Justo Jose de (oor-kee'-thah), Argentine soldier, born in Arroyo de la China, near the capital of Entre Rios, 19 March, 1800; died in San Jose, 11 April, 1870.
Urquiza, on 1 May, issued a manifesto, calling upon the nation to throw off the yoke of the dictator, and on the 29th of that month he concluded, as governor of Entre Rios, an offensive and defensive alliance with Brazil and Uruguay against Rosas.
Urquiza tried to subdue the city, but after an unsuccessful campaign raised they siege on 13 July, 1853, and in November of that year was elected constitutional president for the other thirteen states, with residence in Parana.

Rosas had declared war on Brazil in 1851, which led to the signing of a treaty, on 21 November 1851, among the governments of Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Uruguay and the Brazilian Empire.
In compliance with the treaty, Urquiza led a joint army and crossed the Morón Stream, positioning his forces in Monte Caseros, located in the outskirts of the city of Buenos Aires (today between Caseros and El Palomar, Tres de Febrero, within Greater Buenos Aires).
