New data gathered during the 1997 field season in the Jutiapa coastal district have shed light on the architecture, ceramics and sculptural styles of the Classic Period which demonstrate that the region as a whole was integrated in a wide network of long-distance interactions encompassing most of Southern Mesoamerica.
The patterns of continuity from earlier periods indicate that similar interaction networks might have been in existence without interruptions since as early as the Early Preclassic period.
