 Amazon.ca: Music: Mandylion [IMPORT]
The first album to juxtapose the formidable vocal talents of the newly arrived Anneke Van Giersbergen's in striking contrast with the group's progressive metal, much of the material sounds amazingly confident and cohesive from the very start, be it through the driving intensity of opener "Strange Machines" or the death metal-style...
For the most part, Mandylion was sort of a crossover album for the band, as it displayed much of the metal instrumental prowess of the previous releases, but also hinted at the more quiet accoustic nature of the newer albums.
Mandylion is actually the first album to feature Anneke's beautiful voice, but it's actually not the first Gathering album.

Juxtapose Rated R's Southern charm - he says m'am - against hard-core lyrics spit out in his rough and rugged vocals and you get a wickedly fierce 22-track album with a mixture of skits and funk-drenched cuts.
As with all of the tracks on the album, it's sample free.
Rated R, took the mic at age 15 and began his career in rap with Jam Pony Express and Bass Style DJ's.

 RockNet Review: Jon Anderson
Anderson has his own Native American guide in the form of Longwalker, whose contribution to the album includes some observations about mankind's spiritual connections to his environment.
Meanwhile, back in the First World, Anderson and his fellow Yes-men are facing a busy year with the prospect of a new album from the group and a summer tour.
Listeners familiar with, for instance, Robbie Robertson and the Red River Ensemble's groundbreaking album of 1994, "Music For The Native Americans," with its chants and drums, will find this to be a contrast.

BLACK MOUNTAIN - REVIEWS & PRESS
Black Mountain largely avoid the dangers of being too slavishly imitative by throwing together disparate elements: at their best they smoothly juxtapose the power chords of Black Sabbath with the clockwork grooves of Booker T and the MGs, making for a perfect marriage of hard rock and soul.
Black Mountain’s new album is a rock and roll dreamscape: eight swelling tracks in forty seven minutes suffused with talent, depth, and dancability.
Most of the songs on Black Mountain are as anthemic, dramatic and grandiose as anything off of a mid-’70s concept album, a quality which Camirand readily acknowledges.

 MetroActive Music Tricky
Juxtapose is Tricky's most accessible album since Maxinquaye, largely because he seems to have left most of the beats to DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill and DMX producer Grease.
ON THE SONG "Black Steel," the brilliant, agitated Public Enemy cover on his 1995 debut album, Maxinquaye, Tricky took all the insurrectionary bravado of the original and turned it inward against himself.
If Tricky's touch is elusive on some of the underlying soundscapes--many of which shriek with unexpected electric guitars--vocally he's more present than ever, alternating a furiously fast, perfectly syncopated raggae-inflected rap with his signature scratchy hiss.

Tricky's next full-length solo effort, Angels With Dirty Faces, appeared in 1998, followed a year later by Juxtapose, a collaboration with Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs and DMX's Grease.
Tricky's debut album, Maxinquaye, appeared in the spring of 1995.

Converge: You Fail Me: Pitchfork Review
The album's totemic centerpieces-- the title track and "In Her Shadow", which combined account for a third of its runtime-- juxtapose the album's densest and most pastoral moments without seeming forced.
Converge are still programmed for hyper-speed, but Ballou throws in some artier stuff where he can, leveling "In Her Blood" and "Hanging Moon" with fairer-- if not quite huggable-- melodies.
Converge are some of the most fearsome technicians in metal, but unlike Dillinger Escape Plan, whose songs are like feats of 22nd-century civic engineering, they're unusually organic.

The Western Breeze - Volume 70 - Issue 7 - Welcome to the Neon Ballroom
Thus the songs of Neon Ballroom juxtapose spacey guitars and unearthly keyboard sounds with semi- classical touches of cello and harp, sometimes all within one single.
In this expertly crafted album of music past, present, and future silverchair- at only 19 years old, have created an album that is truly timeless.

 Music Mental metal
The son of Cher and Greg Allman (of the Allman Brothers), Elijah spent his childhood in a succession of such places, and Commencement (Elementree/DreamWorks), Deadsy’s long-delayed superb debut album, is set in a kind of boarding-school-of-the-damned.
On the album’s second half, the riffs turn more ominous and the synthesizers begin to recall the jarring echoes of scores from 1980s Z-grade horror movies, but for the majority of the disc Elijah takes his inspiration from less obvious (for metal, at least) sources.
If you had to invent a genre to describe the result, you’d end up with something like grindcore synthpop — yet Deadsy’s hauntingly pretty music doesn’t juxtapose polar opposites but rather soars dramatically from heavy to weightless in a single chord.

 CD Baby: JOHN EDMONDS: Subzerosonic
Oymyakon is somewhat reminiscent of the little ditties that Terry Riley composed for the film Le Secret de la Vie on his album Lifespan.
The coordination and syncopation of Edmonds' Grand Stick playing is impressive - it's not easy to juxtapose complex meters while playing funky bass lines and pointillistic melodies as well as triggering synths.

Indeed, it's been a while since audiences have seen a live Deftones show or listened to a full-length album of new material.
After yet another endless jag of touring, in the summer of 2000, the group released White Pony, the platinum-plus selling album that erased any lingering doubts that the Deftones were merely a poster band for the post-Metallica, neo-hardcore movement.
Among the first groups to juxtapose masculine bombast (heavy riffs and earsplitting wails) with feminine gentleness (dreamy tones and melodious vocals), the Deftones have generated countless imitators in their wake and have influenced other successful bands like System Of A Down.

Pretty Girls Make Graves: Good Health: Pitchfork Review
Conjuring up a direct musical comparison to Pretty Girls Make Graves proves difficult, as the album plays like an aural amalgam of the past 40 years or so of rock music (though Sonic Youth, Unwound and Les Savy Fav all serve as dandy reference points).
Though never letting the 'Guitarist's Grimoire' set the parameters for their sound, PGMG manage to juxtapose riff-concentrate with enough perspective and focus to escape even the faintest grasps of what could have devolved into 'virtuoso punk' under less inspired hands.
Where such circumstances are, more often than not, a hindrance to the potential quality of a final product, Pretty Girls are clear beneficiaries of this situation, as the short allotment of time seems to have contributed to the sense of urgency found in both the group's writing and performance.

 'Rearranger': Robert Plant conjures Zep
Embroidered with the singer's perpetual folk fascination, the album builds off his Moroccan obsession while maintaining the sex and swagger, light and shade of Zeppelin's deep blues, working less to juxtapose those sounds than to cleave into what Plant sees as a shared soul.
NEW YORK - Outside of being the title of his newest release, Mighty Rearranger is a fairly neat synopsis of Robert Plant's career evolution.
After all, of all the blues mutations that form rock history, it was Led Zeppelin's witch-brew of sweltering plantation angst and black-magic-world psychedelia that was the most compelling.

Did the comic book really need to grow up? By Tom Shone
Watchmen's whodunit plot was not allowed to kick into gear until late in the day and climaxes with Ozymandias spouting Postmodern art theory in his snowbound eyrie ("phosphor-dot swirls juxtapose; meanings coalesce from semiotic chaos before reverting to incoherence").
In truth, it's more like the White Album, a fractious, blitzed masterwork.
Alan Moore's Watchmen, originally published in 1986, was the comic-book series that supposedly revolutionized the industry, defrocked the superhero, and invented the graphic novel at a stroke.

Beyond albums by Pothole Skinny and Your Team Ring, Perhapstransparent has recently released the vinyl version of P.G. Six's The Well Of Memory, the self-titled album from the experimental rock band Flaming Fire, and the first CD from American Watercolor Movement.
Many Perhapstransparent recordings - including those records by Pothole Skinny, Connolly's own band - juxtapose electronic textures with pastoral or acoustic arrangements.
Connolly has been pals with the Watercolor Movement musicians for years: he roomed with John Fesken and Jason Cieradkowski when he first arrived in Jersey City, and their living room was for many years a de facto recording studio.

And the incentives of Zawinul come across very clearly in this album, as grinding guitar solos juxtapose against delicate kora lines, big studio beats against mandingo percussive styles and it all come to a holistic meeting point around the soaring, melodic, extraordinarily beautiful voice of Salif Keta.
Recorded in sessions in Bamako, New york and Paris - this albums manages to bring all of that together - the rough and textured cultural expressions of the streets of Bamako, with the clean production of Paris and New York, but always it’s the voice, the composition, the expression and the vision of Salif Keita.
