The actual temple is a striking building whose bright colors evoke the painted Buddhist ghompas of the region; rumor has it that the temple was originally controlled by Buddhists.
The northern matha established by Adi Sankara is nearby at Jyotirmath.

Madhava Asrama's claim to the Jyotirmath Sankaracharya title is based on the stance that after Swarupananda Saraswati took up the Dwaraka Sankaracharya title in 1982, his title at Jyotirmath has been nullified by the passage of time.
As Madhava Asrama's Jyotirmath Sankaracharya title is very much dependent upon the latest intervention by these two bodies, it is not too far off the mark to say that his claim to the title holds only so long as he enjoys their confidence.
As for the Jyotirmath succession controversy, it has always been a matter of public knowledge in India, both because of the close physical proximity of the two separate establishments at Joshimath and because of the fact that all the people involved are public figures.

Shringeri - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In a popular legend, Adi Sankaracharya is said to have selected the site when, walking by the Tunga river, he saw a cobra with a raised hood, providing shelter from the hot sun, to a frog about to spawn.
Four mathas were eventually established by Sankara, in the north (at Jyotirmath, near Badrinath), south (at Sringeri and according to some disputed accounts, also at Kanchipuram), east (at Puri), and west (at Dwaraka) of India.
The name Sringeri is derived from Rishyasringa-giri, a nearby hill that is believed to have contained the hermitage of Rishi Vibhandaka and his son Rishyasringa.

Madhava Asrama's claim to the Jyotirmath Sankaracarya title is based upon the stance that when Svarupananda Sarasvati took up the Dvaraka Sankaracarya title in 1982, his claim to the Jyotirmath title had automatically become null and void.
However, once a Sannyasin was accepted as the Jyotirmath Sankaracarya, and there were no serious disputes about it at that time, the activities of these institutions with respect to succession issues could be construed as unnecessary interference.
As for the Jyotirmath succession controversy, it has always been a matter of public knowledge in India, because of the high-profile connections of the people involved, but Cenkner is astoundingly silent about it.
