Hudson Yards - New York City Department of City Planning
The foresight of the city’s leaders – exemplified best in Manhattan's grid plan of 1811 and the annexation and consolidation of 1898 – has been matched by private entrepreneurship, especially in the railroads and in the subway systems that reached out from the City's point of origin in Lower Manhattan to the outer boroughs.
The City is confident that this area can be transformed into one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the 21st Century because it accomplished this feat at the beginning of the 20th Century.
The No. 7 Subway line would be extended to the west from the existing terminus at West 41st Street and Seventh Avenue, with a station at West 41st Street and Tenth Avenue, and then south, to a new terminus at West 34th Street and Eleventh Avenue.

M.T.A. Increases and Cutbacks - Page 2 - Wired New York Forum
New York has a century-long tradition of politicians' fighting higher transit fares, a resistance that contributed to the bankruptcy of many private rail and bus companies whose fares were controlled by government.
New York's system, especially the subway, is so much more heavily used that it is almost guaranteed to collect far more fares per train, or per mile, allowing it to be more self-sufficient.
The new taxes, to be applied statewide, would not prevent the fare increases or cutbacks that are being considered this month, but by supplying the debt service on a bond issue, it could improve the authority's financial situation in future years.

Subway - Page 10 - Wired New York Forum
New York City Transit is another busy MTA division, with more than $2 billion a year in the new capital program for bus depot, rail yard, fan plant, station rehabilitation, signal, track, and tunnel lighting projects in the five boroughs, said Cosema Crawford, the agency's chief engineer.
She blames the TA and the city, which has encouraged development in Brooklyn, with not accurately projecting the strain on the subway system and ensuring enough trains could be placed in service.
The new cars, identified by the transit agency as R160’s, are similar in many ways to R142’s, which are already in service on most of the system’s numbered lines, and the R143’s, which are in use on the L line.

The Subway has a chequered history; in a parallel with the London Underground the Subway fell into disrepair from about 1940 to 1980 and in 1982 the MTA launched several five-year plans in an effort to upgrade signals, track and rolling stock.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the City of New York Department of City Planning are to promote the transit-oriented redevelopment of the Hudson Yards area, which extends from West 28th Street on the south, Eighth Avenue on the east, West 43rd Street on the north and the Hudson River Park on the west.
MTA New York City Transit is currently in design and construction consultation to minimize the impact on the park during construction.
