K3b - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
K3b is a CD and DVD authoring application for GNU/Linux and other Unix-like operating systems designed for the K Desktop Environment.
The actual disc recording in K3b is done by the command line utilities cdrecord, cdrdao, and growisofs.
One of the odd things K3b can do is "hide" the first track of a CD in the first pregap when you are burning it, thus requiring you to scan backwards from the second track to hear it.

K3b is a GUI frontend to the cd recording programs cdrdao and cdrecord.
K3b is the only app I've needed to burn data DVDs, audio/data CDs, and even a bootable floppy disk image for flashing the bios.
If you use the latest vanilla kernel, your burner might not be recognised as a burner, but as a writer because of some new permission checks that have been introduced in the new kernel.

 Flexbeta - NeroLinux vs K3b
Under the burning properties section of K3b, the typical options are found such as the ability to simulate a recording session, write on the fly, create an image of the compilation only, and the ability to verify the written data; which most of the times is recommended.
K3b also allows for multisessions, which means you can keep adding files to the same CD at a later time.
K3b options allow for burning multiple copies of the image, setting the speed at which to burn the image and the ability to verify the written data.

 VideoHelp.com - Tools - K3b
Big parts of the audio project have been rewritten to have a way better design: - K3b now does not create additional silence between the tracks by default the pregap is treated as part of the previous track like in all other writing applications.
Sadly this does not work with all systems since it seems that K3b does not close the device early enough so cdrecord cannot open it.) 0.11.2 K3bProcess now has a clean API and a non-stupid implementation which fixes the kde 3.2 issue way better than the hotfix from 0.11.1.
Two examples can be found in the tests/kpartplugins dir one of them is a former K3b option which allowed to use audio meta data to rename files while adding them to a data project.

The simple fix for this problem was to download a more recent version of dvd+rw-tools, untar the file, run make and then copy the new binaries to /usr/local/bin/ (and removing the old dvd+rw-tools RPM).
Just wanted to throw in that apparently k3b 0.11 doesn't recognize the dvd+rw-format binary from dvd+rw-tools 5.20 or 5.21 (the two nevest at time of writing) so I had to try 5.19 instead which works.
k3b does, however, recognize growisofs from the two mentioned versions.
