Optional sight hood for k98 - Page 5 - Red Orchestra Forums
The only reason you see early '36-'39 guns with grooves in the front sight base is because that particular rifle went back to the depot for repair.
I could be wrong on the changeover date, as I don't have my references in front of me, but I have a 1937 K98 without hood grooves and a 1941 K98 with them.
K98, G43, and MP44 sight hoods are made of thick heavy spring steel and require a nice, solid set of reverse pliers to be removed efficiently.

K43 BETTER than k98!? - Day Of Defeat Forums
The k98 is more accurate, and the k43 is often 2 hit kills if you attempt to shoot them in the chest (arms in the way).
The biggest issue I have found is the Magzine, sometimes the spring gets weak and will not push up the last 1 or 2 bullets into the chamber properly, which is what causes most of my jams.
THe k98 is superior in range and damage (100% 1 hit kill) and the k43 has less range, less damage, but higher rate of fire.

eBay Guides - The German K98 Mauser Rifle, Parts and Accessory Guide
For those thinking of buying parts and accessories for the WWII German K98 rifle there are things to be sure to ask the seller.
Familiarize yourself well with exactly what it is you are looking to get for your rifle, going by a part name alone, or picture if you are not sure it is what you need, or that it WILL FIT will only wind up costing you time and money if what you get you can't use.
Ask your seller IF the part you are looking to buy is indeed a Repro, many dealers will list parts as such, others not knowing themselves what they have might list it as orginal or state that the orginality is not know.
