Established in 1981 through the amalgamation of Korea Advanced Institute of Science (KAIS) with Korea Institute of Science and Balh Technology (KIST) by the KAIST Law (Law No. 3778; new foundation of the university for the establishment of the bachelor's program), it has currently 7,000 students and 800 teaching staff.
It is the only university controlled by the Ministry of Science and Technology instead of the Ministry of Education.
According to evaluation by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), “KAIST, the best university in Korea, is considered to be comparable to that of the top 10% of U.S universities.” (“KAIST Facts,” 2002).

All students are encouraged to attend a seminar offered by the Department of Finance specifically for KAIST students entitled “Recent Advances in Financial Markets.” In this course, which extends over both Winter and Spring quarters, Fisher Finance faculty will make presentations on topics of particular interest to KAIST students, with implications for markets in Korea.
This course is counted as one (1) course toward the minimum of five (5) courses that students must take during their two quarters of study at the Fisher College of Business.
KAIST students have found the course very useful in the past, and as a result, we have extended its offering over both academic quarters of the program.

A self-regulated bi-pedal robot will be presented to the public later this year, developed by a team of scientists from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
KAIST professor Oh Jun-ho, who led the humanoid research, yesterday said his team would unveil the two-legged robot, named KHR-3, in December.

 KAIST Computer Remains Hacker Proof - The Community's Center for Security
The Information Security Education Research Center (ISC) of the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) said Sunday that no hackers among the 3,664 teams worldwide managed to conquer its third level server and win in the First World Information Security Fair which was held from 9:00am June 27 to 9:00am July 1.
ISC researcher, professor Lee Kwang-hyoung said that the aim of the games was to attract powerful foreign hackers and see what their skills but that due to lack of promotion the number of foreign participants fell short from what they had expected.
The award ceremony will be held from July 20-22 at KAIST during a workshop on the competition..

The paper, entitled “Graphite Nanoplatelet Reinforced Epoxy Composites: The Effect of Exfoliation and Surface Treatment,” shows for the first time that with proper preparation, graphite nanoplateles can be used with an epoxy to increase the modulus and strength by 100% and 65%, respectively.
Participating in the Workshop were 14 KAIST and 7 UCLA faculty members.
