It was important to show presence everyday, though only opening statements, the defendant taking the witness stand himself, closing arguments and the verdict required full-out live shots from the courthouse or newsroom, only the last of those coverage days involving sound (bites) from the key players.
In the end, this was as much about unknown written guidelines at KBJR as anything, and I hope that the experience will lead to an open discussion of all those guidelines among newsroom personnel at NBC6.
Such an exercise can be a lesson to us all: guidelines are not rules; guidelines are useless if only the author (and newsroom personnel with long histories at that station) knows they exist; the time to have ethical discussions is when a question of ethics is not sparked by a looming broadcast deadline.

Cornwell said KBJR’s costs are not as high as some of its other stations, which are facing mandatory upgrades to digital transmission signals.
As mentioned earlier, KBJR also was Granite’s only station in an election battleground market, meaning it was able to haul in substantial political ad revenues that are charged at a much higher rate than nonpolitical advertising.
In a Nov. 10 conference call with financial analysts, Cornwell also indirectly pegged KBJR’s broadcast cash flow at $2 million annually when he said KBJR would be worth $40 million — based on an industry multiple of 20 times cash flow — were it put up for sale.

 Perfect Duluth Day: FCCinfo@fcc.gov
I believe this lack of competition in news gathering is harmful to the public, as it limits the amount of available viewpoints.
If there are not enough people to sell to advertisers at an efficient "cost per thousand," then there ain't enough income to pay news staffs -- far and a away the most expensive part of any TV station.
Fourthly (is that a word?): I believe the arguments made to the FCC include the idea that, now that there are 80 cable channels and a couple hundred satellite channels, it's difficult to argue that the public is limited to merely a few voices in their broadcast media.

The first thing that became obvious was that, although the newsroom may have five or six full-time reporters (and often fewer since at least two work weekends, thus have days off during the week), they have the exact same news hole to fill as stations with five times the staff.
