  McDonnell Douglas KC-10 Extender
The McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender is an advanced aerial tanker and cargo aircraft designed to provide increased global mobility for U.S. armed forces.
Although the KC-l0's primary mission is aerial refueling, it can combine the tasks of a tanker and transport aircraft by refueling fighters and simultaneously carrying the fighter support personnel and equipment on overseas deployments.
In the mid-1990s, the major USAF reorganization that witnessed the elimination of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) resulted in the KC-10 Extender fleet being reassigned among units of the Air Mobility Command (AMC) and Air Combat Command (ACC), before all being controlled by AMC.

The KC-10 Extender is a tanker aircraft in service with the US Air Force.
Though the 59 Extenders currently in service are greatly outnumbered by the venerable KC-135 Stratotanker, the KC-10 has a significantly larger fuel capacity.
Beginning with the Vietnam War doubts began to be raised about the ability of the 700+ strong KC-135 fleet to meet the needs of the United States’ global commitments.

Developed from the DC-10-30CF convertible passenger/cargo model, the KC-10 was modified with three large fuel cells beneath the cabin floor and a retractable fuel boom in the aft fuselage.
These additional tanks give the KC-10 Extender a total fuel capacity of 365,065 lb (161,510 kg), all of which is available for transfer to other aircraft.
In addition, the KC-10 is fitted with an in-flight refueling receptacle of its own allowing the aircraft to remain aloft indefinitely.
