Air Force Technology - KC-767 Tanker Transport Aircraft
The Boeing 767 tanker transport aircraft, designated KC-767 for the US Air Force, is a high-performance version of the Boeing 767-200ER twin-aisle jetliner equipped for fully integrated tanker operations.
The configuration of a commercial 767 for the tanker transport role involves the installation of additional pumps and auxiliary fuel tanks together with the fuel distribution lines below the floor of the main cabin, leaving the main cabin free for cargo, passenger or both cargo and passenger transportation.
The 767 tanker transport will be equipped with military avionics, navigation and communications and an optional defensive aids suite with radar warning receivers and electronic and opto-electronic countermeasures.

  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Boeing 767
The Boeing 767, a widebody jet, was introduced at around the same time as the 757, its narrowbody sister.
On the downside, as the 767 has a slightly narrower fuselage diameter than other wide-body aircraft (such as the Airbus A300 and A310), it is unable to carry ordinary Unit Load Devices, and instead has to use specially designed air freight containers and pallets.
The flight decks of the Boeing 757 and 767 are very similar and as a result, pilots rated in the 757 are also qualified to fly the 767 and vice versa.

 Aerospaceweb.org | Aircraft Museum - Boeing 767
While the 757 was built as a narrowbody replacement for the 727, the 767 is a widebody intended to compete with the rival Airbus A310.
Much of the wing structure and many of the high-lift devices are common to both designs, although the 767 utilizes a wing of greater span, sweep, and chord to provide much greater wing area.
US Air Force plans to lease 100 767 tanker variants for ten years were cancelled after revelations of corruption in the contract award process, but the KC-767 remains a strong contender for an Air Force tanker order.

The Boeing KC-767 is a next generation military aerial refueling and strategic transport aircraft developed primarily for the USAF from the Boeing 767-200.
Boeing received the first order for the 767 Tanker Transport from Italy in 2001 for four aircraft.
It is reported that the RAAF was concerned about the possibility of funding full development that would otherwise be shared with the USAF.

 Boeing 767 - Definition, explanation
The Boeing 767 is a commercial passenger airplane manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes.
The 767 has a seat-to-aisle ratio in economy class of 3.5 seats per aisle, making for quicker food service and quicker exit of the plane than many other jetliners, which typically have between four and six seats per aisle in economy class.
The 767 is to be replaced in the Boeing lineup by the 787.

 KC-767
And under the proposal we submitted to the Air Force, a majority of the structural and systems changes to make the 767 a tanker would also be designed and installed in the airplanes here in Everett, before the tankers are flown to Boeing’s facility in Wichita, Kansas for final modifications and flight tests.
And in the meantime, the “mighty 767” program continues to do well - with 60 unfilled orders for passenger and freighter models.
Would the Air Force not benefit greatly by going to a KC-767 in that they have a lot of derivatives of the 767 already and their pilots are already trained to fly this aircraft.

 [No title]
The 767 has been in service since 1982, and over 800 have been manufactured so far.
The KC-767 was developed partly because it is about the same size as the KC-135 (wingspan is 156 feet, ten more than the KC-135).
Thus the 767 could use the same basing and repair facilities as the 135.

 Airliners.net Military: KC-777?
The 767 and its puny cargo capacity after you place the necessary fuel tanks on it will not be much of a help to the already dwindling fleet.
The example of requiring 2 767s to escort F-15s to Japan is a red herring, as the 767 is not intended to, and will not be used to replace the KC-10, whch already does the job that you propose the MD-11/777 tanker to do.
In terms of a new KC bird, the Air Force wants something that can deliver fuel more then something that can deliver fuel and cargo since cargo capacity doesn't seem to be a problem these days.

Boeing tweaks 767 for tanker: Boeing/aerospace: The Seattle Times
The Chicago-based company said it had tweaked the design of its long-range 767 freighter plane to improve fuel efficiency and allow it to take off and land on shorter runways, giving it greater flexibility in combat situations.
In 2004, Boeing slowed 767 production to one per month as it sought to keep commercial production going long enough so that the line could switch to tanker production without a significant break.
Boeing's 767 is, on paper at least, more affordable than Northrop's aircraft, with a listed retail price of roughly $120 million.

Boeing Co. may change its entry in the competition to build aerial refueling tankers for the U.S. Air Force, reportedly switching the 767 tanker for a modified version of its 777 commercial jet.
Chicago-based Boeing is vying for the multibillion dollar Air Force contract against a rival team led by Northrop Grumman Corp. and EADS North America Inc. The Northrop-EADS team has said it will assemble its tanker, a modified version of the Airbus A330, in Mobile if it can win at least a share of the work.
Aerospace analysts said the 767, which was introduced to customers in 1978, is based on an older airframe than both the 777 and the A330, and so could be more expensive to maintain.

Mark McGraw, Boeing's vice president of tanker programs, told reporters the first of four KC-767s would be delivered to Japan during the first quarter of 2007, with two of four tankers to be delivered to Italy by the end of the year.
He said Boeing was continuing to improve its production process for the 767 and he was confident the KC-767 would be very competitive in terms of its long-term operational and maintenance costs.
The Air Force said it would consider both the value and capabilities of the bids and a higher-priced bidder could win if its overall approach outweighed the cost.
